While half of newspaper articles and news transcripts mentioning the reconciliation bill from its first passage in the House to its signing into law also mentioned Medicaid, less than 6% named ICE, whose budget the bill triples.

The response to this piece on end times fascism co-authored with @naomiaklein.bsky.social has been pretty astounding. I'm reposting in case you missed it.

The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. We must build a movement strong enough to stop them.

Please read my post thread on how a dozen Republicans from Congress toured CECOT on 4/15 and took selfies but Sen. Van Hollen was turned away the very next day.
bsky.app/profile/eyes...
So, Sen. Van Hollen, who flew to El Salvador on 4/16 to visit CECOT, see Abrego Garcia & bring him home was told by VP that he couldn't arrange for him to get in, but somehow, for Sen. Riley Moore (R-W.Va) it was no problemo? And - he got to take selfies. Along with at least a dozen other Senators.

I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you.

The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again."

She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.
