IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR MY WORD COUNT TRACKER!

THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR BUG DISCOVERED!

So, in the current version, when you write in a project for more than 18 days, further tracking will only return negative word counts.

The updated version is now online, so please redownload it.

Question for my UK/EU forensic anthropology friends.

Any of you currently has a PhD position available? Please drop your links, and share widely!

If you are interested in climate change, I need your help. Who is your favorite climate communicator?

This is for a project I'm working on :)

Please share widely :)

It also includes the minor bug fix that it now won't break in leap year February :) (fixed until 2100, when you get an extra day 🤷‍♀️)

I'm not very good at #ShamelessSelfpromoSaturday.

Anyways if you're a writer and you want an easy way to track your word count and see if you're still on track of meeting your monthly/project deadline, why not check out my free, Excel based* word count tracker on itch♥️

Other than the writing word count tracker i made (link in bio ;)) this one is an independent program, so no need for Excel or anything :)

Right now the first version is just about finished, and I'll probbly start looking for betatesters for this one soon, so keep an eye out for that :)
Screenshot of the main tracking page. You have a headline reading: you have read 0 books 0 fanfics 0 papers this year.
you can then enter the author, other authors, title, finished on, pages, hours minutes , words, Ref(ISBN, DOI, Link), unpublished work (incl. pre print, beta read, etc.), You have a dropdown menu to choose between printed books, audio books, fanfics, and papers and finally a box to leave a rating. On the botoom you have a few rectangles to track how far along with your reading goals you are.

This is where my WIP comes in.

In the current version, you can keep track of everything you read, including an option to rate it,
you can set a reading goal for a bunch of things (books, minutes, fanfics, etc)
and it automatically calculates a rough translation between words, pages and minutes
screenshot of the first time set up page, on the left you choose what you're reading namely printed books, audio books, fanfiction, papers and on the right you can choose what you want to track namely books, fanfics, papers, pages, minutes, words. You can also choose a background color. A footnote explains that the trackr has a conversion between pages minutes and words.

this one is for the #readers!

What's the biggest problem you as a reader have?

Exactly! simultaneously tracking you printed and audiobooks, fanfics and scientific papers!

The second biggest problem is trying to figure out, how many audiobook minutes the 100k fanfic is :D (/j))

Hey #SciSky #SciComm #Science #Academia People on here.

I'm on holidays the last week of July and I kinda wanna get back into knowledge absorption.

Can you please drop academic/scientific conferences in Europe in the comments?

Mostly interested in Climate, Anthropology, but anything is good!

I can highly recommend reading a book that's older than me that exactly predicted what's happening now, except of course it was meant as a warning and gave a few good ways to avoid this, ah well. Shit happens. After all we do live in "A Demon Haunted World" 🤷🫣

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

And so the overall co2 changes in the atmosphere are mostly dictated by the changes in plant growth in the northern hemisphere, but slightly shifted by the changes in the southern hemisphere.

So our max CO2 concentration each year is in April/May and the lowest in September/October :)
chaoticbrainperson.bsky.social
The answer is that they partially do. But if you look at a world map, and compare the land masses in the northern hemisphere, vs the landmasses in the southern hemisphere, you see a very large imbalance. Most of the Earth's land mass is in the northern hemisphere. And with that most of the plants ->
chaoticbrainperson.bsky.social
Quick #SciComm:
CO2 is taken up by plants. So when plants grow (in Spring/summer) CO2 levels in the atmosphere go down, and when plants die back (autumn and Winter) CO2 gets released back into the atmosphere.
But the seasons are shifted in northern and southern hemisphere, so why don't they cancel?>

Looking up ...

Yesterday marks the first *daily* Mauna Loa reading above 431 ppm since record keeping began in 1958.

The Climate Casino put the Over/Under for the *monthly* max CO2 this year at 430.70 ppm. Stay tuned!

Sadly the US government has also stopped basically all funding in this area, so even if you would like to run your own double blind study in your living room, sadly there's no more money for that :(

“And I’m like, what do you mean, you ‘do your own research’? You running a double-blind study in your living room, dawg?”
- A guy walking ahead of me with his friends on a NYC sidewalk in 2021, also my favorite overheard dialogue of the entire pandemic
NYT headline: “Kennedy Advises New Parents to ‘Do Your Own Research’ on Vaccines”
Subheader:
“In an interview with Dr. Phil, the health secretary offered false information about vaccine oversight and revealed a lack of basic understanding of new drug approvals.”
