Just because someone is rich it doesn't mean they are smart. Generations upon generations of the smartest people the world has ever seen died as farmers in obscurity. We only get to know about the people with the money and power who were written about. They're powerful, not smart.

I think Americans, blessed with relatively stable government for a long time, assume there is someone, some adult, who will step in and make things right before the President does anything REALLY bad.

There’s not.

If I have one frustration posting on BlueSky it's the lack of post editing! My brain likes to skip words, or just uses the wrong one sometimes, making me sound semi-deranged.
Not sure about the stores down your way but Audreys in Edmonton is my go to for special orders and the do deliver. Not sure if it's Canada Post or if they deliver beyond Edmonton though. They the oldest independent book store here.

You don't have to be convinced to read SNOW CRASH; you just have to be convinced to read the *first few pages* of SNOW CRASH.

'Cause after that, you will WANT to read SNOW CRASH.
1. I'm NOT the sort of SF/F nerd who thinks everyone needs to read a "canon" of older works in genre like they're homework before they get to call themselves a fan, nevertheless the book I'm always mildly surprised when people say they haven't read it is "Snow Crash," which to me is era-defining...

That's not how representative Democracy is supposed to work. My reps are all Dems. They're gonna hear from me when they're not pulling their weight, which they sure as hell aren't. I didn't vote for submission.

Seeing all these feckless Democrats in Congress flailing and asking "what do you want me to do" and I keep thinking: bare minimum, I want you to have the energy of a 76-year-old John Lewis staging a sit-in on the floor of Congress in opposition to the inaction on gun violence after Pulse. MINIMUM.

THAT SAID: Be gentle with any federal workers you know who have to call it "Gulf of America" in their official communications, they really have no choice in the matter and they almost certainly know how ridiculous it is. It's not their fault their boss is a thundering chudwomble.

Interesting Lord of the Rings fact that feels more like @lowqualityfacts.bsky.social is that in the first draft Strider/Aragorn was a hobbit named Trotter.

(I’m currently reading Return of the Shadow which documents the writing of LOTR).

Digging into the early drafts of Lord of the Rings and it’s fascinating that, at least in the early chapters, Tolkien was a pantser rather than a plotter.

Most Black folks knew this nonsense was coming. It's wrong, but we've always had to hustle, so I feel like collectively we'll be all right. But I also can't help thinking that a whole lot of white people, deprived of the "DEI" excuse, are about to get a wake-up call about their own mediocrity.

Lawful good is an attentive lover who nails basics really well, makes sure you come, and cuddles after. Chaotic good brings finger puppets and pina colada-scented lube and checks for consent at every step, but after you may (nonregretfully) wonder what possessed you to say "yes" in the first place.
Lawful good isn't a bad thing! (but chaotic good is a lot of fun too)
