One approach is to teach about the ‘values’ as concepts to be applied to encourage critical and evaluative thinking about contemporary issues. Otherwise I think the idea of ‘promoting’ democracy or the rule of law as ‘values’ can avoid the political dimension. openjournals.ljmu.ac.uk/prism/articl...

Sadly, I think we've been teaching digital/media literacy all wrong. Instead of focusing on teaching people how to be skeptical and spot manipulation, we should focus on teaching people how these systems work so they can effectively use them to share their messages and promote their values.

Citizenship speeds up the economic, educational, political and social integration of immigrants.

And yet, several EU countries (e.g. 🇩🇪🇫🇷🇫🇮) have recently made obtaining citizenship more difficult, or plan to do so.

Good that the 🇮🇹 referendum on 8/9 June
points into a different direction.

Academic studies consistently show that access to citizenship has positive effects. Immigrants who become citizens experience lower unemployment, earn higher income, less likely to be overqualified for jobs & experience stronger sense of belonging

Inaugural Lecture, Professor Oliver Escobar: "Democracy as if the future mattered: Can democratic innovation change the world?"

We are undergoing an unprecedented global democratic recession, but also a period of democratic innovation. What is at the heart of this apparent contradiction? Can democracy evolve to improve the prospect of desirable futures for people and planet?

The world faces social, political, economic and ecological crises, and there is doubt that traditional forms of democratic governance can cope or even survive. In this context, what can the field of democratic innovation offer to the task of sociopolitical reimagining and change? The field is advancing globally, based on the premise that the challenges of our time require mobilising the collective intelligence and capabilities of citizens and communities.

In this inaugural lecture, Oliver Escobar will offer a critical but optimistic take on democratic innovation. He will argue that the next decade will be crucial for the future of democracy and for the democracy of the future. And that we all have a role to play.
