As an interim measure, we are also calling for all meat to be labelled to specify if it comes from animals that were stunned/not-stunned, allowing people to make informed choices.

The majority of halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter. When this is done effectively, the animal is rendered unconscious and unable to feel pain. However, while non-stun slaughter continues to take place, we will continue to call for a ban.

We remain opposed to all non-stun slaughter and ineffective stunning at slaughter and continue to engage with policy makers on this issue, despite this article suggesting otherwise.

Sharing another commitment from the new UK Government Animal Welfare Strategy!

Culling male chicks is a common practice in the egg industry. As male chicks cannot lay eggs, they are often considered a 'waste product'. We welcome steps to end this cruel practice.

Around 90% of pigs sent for slaughter in the UK are currently killed using CO2. This involves lowering pigs into a CO2 chamber, where they panic, fight for breath, and eventually suffocate.

Steps to end this cruel method are long overdue.

The UK Government have committed to publishing guidance clarifying that live boiling is not an acceptable killing method for crabs and lobsters.

Great work from our friends at @crab_welfare.

The UK Government will be consulting on legislation to reduce suffering at slaughter for fish.

77 million fish are farmed and slaughtered in the UK every year, but despite this, there are currently very few legal protections for these sentient animals.
December 26, 2025 at 6:11 PM
The Government's Animal Welfare Strategy includes a commitment to support voluntary efforts to move away from the use of fast-growing meat chicken
breeds.

While we ultimately want to see more than voluntary progress, this is a welcome step. We will continue our work to improve chicken welfare.
