OTD February 12 1988 US Navy cruiser USS Yorktown, accompanied by the destroyer USS Caron, exercising the right of innocent passage through Soviet territorial waters is bumped by the Soviet Frigate Bezzavetny which itself was accompanied by the frigate SKR-6. The Bezzavetny was
two warships in close proximity. The closer vessel is the USS Yorktown. the smaller vessel, the soviet frigate Bezzavetny, is angled towards the Yorktown.

It was a militant Era and a number of young, idealistic #communists in Western countries voluntered to share information with Moscow.
Sadly - some of the best intelligence were defined as disinformation by the dictator, #Stalin

Today in 1977, Robert Aldrich’s thriller “Twilight’s Last Gleaming” was released. In it, a maverick US Air Force general (Burt Lancaster) escapes from death row, commandeers a Titan ICBM launch complex in Montana, and threatens to start World War III unless the president accedes to all his demands.

FACT OF THE DAY. 8 February 1950. East German State Security Service (SSD), which everyone called the Stasi, was officially founded by law. It spied on its own citizens on a massive scale. It was considerably more pro-active and extensive than even the Gestapo.
