I've spent more time than I care to admit obsessing over politics. And yet sometimes I think about the diff btwn changing government and changing society/culture. I wonder whether being a politics junkie is like only searching for the lost item under the streetlamp.

How DOES culture change, anyway?
I wonder whether this year, we failed to clear the air about 2021, when 80,000 souls voted No on 2.

"Opponents spent $$$ to twist the Q2 story!" Yes, they did, to a receptive audience. It's still working.

"Q2 is not on the ballot this year!" But the unresolved schism is.
I ranked Hampton 1, Davis 2, Fateh 3. I'm expecting Frey to win, Jazz to do better than expected, and Fateh supporters to be disappointed by the RCV reallocations.
I don't think the 2021 no-on-2 voters are done being freaked out by the possibility of real change. (I voted Kate/Sheila, yes on 2.) 1/

I read Liam's thread yesterday about the dire state of city government under Frey. That these conditions weren't and aren't common knowledge, says something strange and deeply discouraging about the ?culture? ?power structure? in our city, and is a big part of why Frey may win re-election anyway.

I just rage-donated a little bit to Soren's campaign.

I had forgotten that in 2017, in the first round of RCV voting, Tom Hoch had around 19% of first-choice ballots. That's a lot of votes, for someone who was generally to the right of Frey.

one of the interesting thing i have seen in the platner discourse is a refusal to confront a thing on its own terms. to his pundit supporters, platner isn’t a novice candidate with perhaps questionable judgment to be evaluated on his ability to win, but a symbol to wield against rivals

I just gave a little bit to two underrated, crucial campaigns: @efornorth.bsky.social (City Council, Ward 5) and @ehbforbet.bsky.social (Board of Estimate and Taxation). I heard elsewhere there's some kind of campaign finance deadline tonight. Go E! Go EHB!

Following up on the "dining while Black" thing, and how Black people know and have always known, how many white folk in the US would have supported this Trump admin, while white Dems greatly underestimated it.

Imagine these 4 men are servers at a restaurant.

White diners don't notice a difference🤷🏿‍♂️

This YouTuber, known as KatGetsMoney on TikTok, has been interviewing Mpls mayoral candidates. Interviews with Fateh and Hampton are up. Dunno whether she's interviewing Davis but I hope so. On TT she says that she's interviewed the incumbent as well, stay tuned. 👀

I genuinely think one of the reasons fascism took hold here is the idea that only sociopathic monsters find fascism appealing when that's simply never been the case

The logic goes: I am not a sociopath. Trump appeals to me. Therefore, Trump can't be fascist

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

I finished listening to the Klein/Coates podcast, and it is honestly fascinating and widely misunderstood: it isn’t about Klein putting forward any particular politics as much as it is an intervention, by a friend, for someone who has lost their political rudder in the wake of defeat. 1/

Right now, Minneapolis can choose a different story than the one people are telling about us – we can choose to believe in the power of us.

Voting is open now until November 4. I hope you'll rank me first on your ballot because Minneapolis deserves better.

Regarding the Hampton 1/Frey 2 voters: If you think they're unhelpful, then consider that maybe--just maybe--if Jazz were not in the race, these voters would inevitably rank only Frey. That if Frey's poll numbers erode, then the media may be compelled to FINALLY tell a different story.

I am ranking Jazz Hampton 1st. We watched this video last night. I found it odd, as of now anyway.
Rybak evidently has a problem with the incumbent. I wonder if he has another shoe to drop on this race. Otherwise, why do this one thing, so late in the game, when Jazz's name recognition is still low?

I found this op-ed to be more than a little powerful. Turns a certain narrative on its head. Proved to be sadly prophetic regarding Lake Street near 35W, where it looks like a shooting happened just hours after this was published.

Happy birthday Jazz!
Some people ask for cake on their birthday. I’m asking for campaign donations 🗳️🎂 Because nothing says ‘happy birthday’ like fueling the movement. Let’s win this thing, together. 🎉

Donate $3.50, $35, or even $350 to help me celebrate 35 years! 🎁
