FRIGHT NIGHT, dir. Tom Holland (1985)
Prime 1980s comic horror. Sexy vampires, incredible practical effects, good scares, and Roddy McDowell’s finest late-era performance. The movie wouldn’t work half as well without him.

Trump and Stephen Miller have relied on an army of MAGA "influencers" widely disseminating a fraudulent picture of Portland in chaos, to bolster the case for deploying military.

NYT has a good new piece on this. But it made several missteps worth highlighting. 2/

BOOK #66, 2025
A SPINDLE SPLINTERED, by Alix E. Harrow (2021)
Lovely deconstruction/reconstruction of fairy tale mythos. Harrow twists the misogynistic tropes behind the legend to suit her noble needs. A great tale, with wonderful characters and fine, nay, ENCHANTING style.

It is a terrible thing, to get stressed out over a job you couldn’t give a shit about.

7) THE MIST, dir. Frank Darabont (2007)
A nihilistic delight, and the best Stephen King adaptation outside of THE SHINING. The creature design is *chef kiss* and Marcia Gay Harden is one of the most terrifying (and sadly realistic) villains of the millennium.

6) JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY, dir. Adam Marcus (1993)
None of the Friday the 13ths are objectively “good.” But I give this one points for a) trying a new tact, b) having the best opening scene, and c) being (in the unrated cut) arguably the goriest of them all.

BOOK #65, 2025
THE PREDATOR, by Christopher Golden (2018)
Cookie-cutter novelization that highlights the movie’s failings. The movie smooths out its inconsistencies through charismatic actors & enjoyable action; lacking that, this lands with a thud, particularly in the lengthy ending.

5) THE OMEN, dir. Richard Donner (1976)
Time for some classic 1970s horror. There’s nothing like an evil child to summon the heebie-jeebies. I’ve never seen the sequels, perhaps it’s time I give them a watch.

4) EVIL DEAD RISE, dir. Lee Cronin (2023)
The Book of the Dead finally leaves the woods, landing in a decrepit high rise with many tasty victims to choose from. As gleefully bloody as it gets, an all-out gorefest that takes no prisoners. Fun, fun, fun. Groovy.

BOOK #64, 2025
SOUR CANDY, by Kealan Patrick Burke (2007)
Short, VERY creepy novella. Like the best episodes of The Twilight Zone, little is explained & it’s all that more unnerving as a result. A lovely little slice of cosmic horror mixed with the trials inherent in parenthood.

A man unwillingly becomes guardian to a mysterious child. Like the best of The Twilight Zone, little is explained & it’s all that more unnerving as a result. A lovely slice of cosmic horror mixed with the trials inherent in parenthood.

2) NIGHT OF THE DEMON (1957)
Arguably Jacques Tourneur’s masterpiece. A spooky slice of cosmic horror, rife with atmosphere, black magic, runes, terror, mystery, and even Stonehenge. Fantastic.

1) 7 DOORS OF DEATH (1981)
The truncated U.S. version of Lucio Fulci’s hallucinogenic gorefest THE BEYOND. Makes even less sense, but those images, man..,have white eyeballs ever looked spookier? Have popped-out eyeballs ever looked squishier? Has Hell ever looked less appealing?

Let’s hope! The Canadian postal strike has halted its progress, but it’ll get here eventually. I wonder if Echo accepts pitches, I’d LIVE to try a Prince of Darkness adaptation. Or Lifeforce.

If only Canadian geography allowed for my attendance. Damn you, you huge majestic nation!
