I haven’t seen this label used before but it seems apt. The video contains a good discussion of what “science populism” is and how it’s harmful.

It was a huge pleasure to be back at the Royal Institution last month! I gave a lecture all about the mysteries of dark matter, which is now up on YouTube. 🧪🔭

(As a bonus, my demo actually worked, unlike in my 2021 Ri talk...!)

Speaking out for science ... My subjective conclusions to a short talk on "From Einstein to Astrology:

Enjoyed giving a short talk "From Einstein to Astrology:
On Misquotes, Scepticism, and Speaking Out for Science" at the #VISESS doctoral school, remembering our open letter to Austrian public TV ultimately cancelling an astrology show. A small victory given the constant attacks on science...

How far back in time can the naked eye see?

To see back in the Universe farther than ever before, we need large, powerful telescopes.

But the naked eye, if you look just right, can take you impressively far.

24 November 1859: 'On the Origin of Species', Charles Darwin's groundbreaking book, was published.

Darwin's magnum opus is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology and is undoubtedly one among the most important books in the history of science.

One of the most exciting discoveries from JWST is "Little Red Dots": ultra-distant galaxies rapidly forming new stars & spawning a giant black hole

They tell us that galaxies grew up a lot faster than we thought. We don't know how--but new observations offer clues. 🧪🔭

La Nina is here and the global cool-down is well underway (global mean sea surface temps are lowest since March 2023).
Remember it's not the individual ups & downs that matter, it's the steady warming trend, which will continue until we reach zero carbon emissions.

On 7 November 1878, physicist Lise Meitner was born.

Read Baez’s thread: a real jewel of science storytelling and passion.

Lise Meitner also kicked the door wide open for women in physics with nothing but genius and grit.

Read it, fall in love, share it.

Lise Meitner, who discovered nuclear fission and did the experiments that led Pauli to postulate neutrinos, is one of my heroes. She had to work twice as hard for everything, and did so much.

I tell a bit of her story here:
