Peter M. Cox CBE is professor of Climate System Dynamics within the Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Exeter. He is also the director of the Global Systems Institute. Until 2006 he was the Science Director - Climate Change at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and before that he worked at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research (1990-2004). .. more

New paper in ESD (esd.copernicus.org/articles/16/...) showing duration of overshoot matters for preventing climate systems from tipping. Crossing a tipping point does not equal tipping. We will overshoot 1.5°C of global warming, that is quite certain…but it’s not game over. The damage will be real — species loss, food insecurity, climate chaos — but if we act fast, we can still bring temperatures back down.

Most of the human caused climate forcing (that what forces the climate to change) uncertainty is due to the enormous aerosol uncertainty.

See grey 90% range around the thick black 'Total anthropogenic' line.

Reducing this uncertainty is paramount!

Many care about the actual science, while some pretend to care while openly campaigning against the science.

We will all lose when geoengineering will be implemented without the crucial research being done to mitigate risks.

Not to mention scapegoating aerosol research.

All reasonable concerns. However, most climate change risks scale with global warming, and SRM is the only way that we know to reduce global warming quickly. So, I think we should be studying SRM openly and without stigma, including the challenging governance and equity issues.

Yep, that's a big risk that underlies the 'moral hazard' argument against geoengineering. But for SRM, at least, we could only allow counteracting the warming due to Air Quality improvements, and not that due to greenhouse gas increases.

We are entering the second half of the climatological autumn and temperatures are still higher than in mid summer in Southern Australia.
Today Cape Willoughby had a minimum temperature of 22.6C, by far its hottest night ever recorded in April.
