Cheers to friend and #SciComm client Maxwell Leung at Arizona State University (@leung-lab.bsky.social) and colleagues on this dazzlingly written #SciPol explainer discussing major gaps in U.S. cannabis policies monitoring and regulating for contaminants, quality assurance, and patient safety. 🧪
The disconnect between federal and state regulation of cannabis has far-reaching consequences, Symone T. Griffith, Marisa L. Kreider, & @leung-lab.bsky.social write—for the cannabis industry, product safety, scientific research, and the health and safety of patients. issues.org/coordinated-...
A Coordinated Approach to Cannabis Policy and Product Safety
The United States urgently needs a coordinated approach to regulating cannabis use that prioritizes product safety and patient well-being.

Congrats to my friend and #SciComm client Max Leung and his mentee Symone Griffith on this incredibly well-written #SciPol position paper on cannabis health and safety. We expect our food and medicine to be safe for consumption, so why not medical cannabis? Well done Max and Symone—read it below 👇🏽🧪

We discuss the fragmented & inconsistent cannabis regulation in the U.S., emphasizing that gaps between federal & state policies undermine product safety, clinical guidance, & patient well-being, but national standards & academic involvement can contribute to patient safety in the U.S. & beyond 🧵2/3

A handy UNDP social graphic on misinformation:

"Before you share online, consider the 5 W's

WHO made it?
WHAT is the source of information?
WHERE did it come from?
WHY are you sharing this?
WHEN was it published?"

Thought:

Instead of generative A.I., what we actually need is better *search tools* to find information we're looking for.

And for researchers, we always need new tools to visualize, characterize, prepare, and analyze data. (e.g. like what ModelBuilder in ArcGIS did for geospatial analysis.) 🧪

Work in fundraising? This new research shows that when someone else covers the cost of impact data, donors give 13% more effectively.

Keep in mind: some donors prefer their entire gift go directly to programs, not data collection.
Outsourcing cost of ‘impact’ data could mean 13% more bang for every charitable buck
When donors are better informed, they can accomplish more with the money they give away. But who should pay for that information?

Although I've left the #Sacramento area, I'm so proud to see how the #SciComm community continues to flourish. Thrilled for this interview with my friends Nick Gray (who now leads @capscicomm.org ) and Jared Shaw @shawshankrxn.bsky.social (who founded #DavisSciCafe). #KeepScienceSpicy, everyone! 🧪🌶️

And here is the speaker lineup from the #2025公視國際研討會 last week hosted at National Taiwan University by the Public Television Service (PTS) of Taiwan. Worth a look for anyone in journalism, media and society, extremism tracking, and sociology in the digital age.

It was actually made a number of years ago! The product of very in-depth research by Potential Energy on effective messaging. They have a 100% science based approach to framing and messaging which I admire greatly. But it wasn’t until this year that they got the resources to air it like this.
A campaign for humanity needs to listen to humanity
Our campaigns are backed by extensive audience research and data-driven insights that shift the climate narrative to win the fights that matter.
