Okay griffin Newman says there’s an Ishtar reference(!) in Wake Up Dead Man and I’d have to rewatch both to get what it is I guess? So it’ll kill me til then. (I just saw and really enjoyed the latest Knives Out, and it is better with a crowd for sure.)

bsky freelance writer friends, thinking of pitching a story to a few different outlets that has a men's theme to it. Are there any more hipster men's magazines out there you pitch to? Less of the Men's Health and uh Maxim type outlets, basically.

Spot on, worth full watch, and cartoon in question is peak Cranky Boomer (mocking something that never happens)
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥

I’m sure I’m stating the obvious or maybe not but there’s definitely a disturbing real life parallel or subtext to Holly’s journey/isolation with Vecna. (Stranger Things S5)
Without spoiling more, it’s just something that comes to mind even more given a thing in the headlines these days.

[completely blatant hook hold on Washington offensive lineman]
Cris Collinsworth: “Eh okay sure it’s technically a hold, but can you really call that this late in the game. No fair!” (Ok he didn’t say the last thing but basically the rest)

The New Deal wasn’t built on a promise that there would be “no ceiling” for the richest Americans.

Quite the opposite, in fact. FDR knew its politics could only work if he singled out the rich as villains and knew that its policies could only work if the rich paid their fair share in taxes.

Big example of a mediocre white man continually failing upward: football coach Lane Kiffin. Literally hated everywhere he’s gone, failed in multiple places and leaving before he’s driven out of town, but gets a big coaching gig. Every time. It’s inexplicable.

Anyway, enjoy your new coach, LSU!

The still-young cast of Stranger Things continues to be so good and appealing that they can overcome both occasional nonsense and some bad hair design. (But seriously, their chemistry over the years of working together shows and they shine in season 5.)

I’m dumbstruck by news of the death of Tom Stoppard—maybe because he hoarded all the words and knew how to use them better than just about anyone. I hope we savor his spectacular wit and erudition and argue about the politics of his plays forever. He was monumental, and also a kind and curious man.

Does Rob Reiner have funniest throwaway line in Spinal Tap II? “a winker, as opposed to a wanker. You can always trust a wanker.”
I’d classify Tap2 as amusing as opposed to the first one’s hilarity, and more in on the meta-joke, so not a classic. But enjoyable with some surprisingly good music.

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

Watching that Peanuts special about Charlie Brown hosting a makeshift Thanksgiving to accommodate his orphan lesbian friends, his dog cooks for everyone with assistance from a bird, a diverse group of kids enjoys snacky feast and they all still get to go to Nana’s house for more food. Life in 1973!

This is disgraceful toadying to someone who could well be dead, out of office, or both by the time this reanimated corpse knuckle-drags itself to the screen. Some context: Ratner directed the state-approved Melania doc that is coming to Prime, so he's now a friend of The Family. >
I teased this last night in What I’m Hearing but now confirmed: Paramount WILL release Rush Hour 4 after prodding from Trump on behalf of Brett Ratner. Distribution deal. Producer Tarak Ben Ammar is lining up financing. Get ready for the dumbest possible state-controlled media.

Watching an old Deep Space 9 episode and thinking, isn’t it funny that “Cardassians” sounds so similar to “Kardashians”?

Both are major alien antagonists in our universe who are prosperous and imperialistic

Section in Mr Scorsese on Last Temptation made me realize I didn’t know nearly enough about the uproar that film caused. Absolutely insane, terrible stuff, including movie theater in France bombed, antisemitic protests outside exec’s home, Pat Buchanan on TV calling for violence etc. Religion, man.
