Close, but not quite. I tried & tried, and now hate Elsa Lanchester's absolutely AMAZING face a teensy bit. It is *really* unique & hard to draw! I guess next time I should do the graph or something more technical/exact, instead of freehand like I do.
A pencil drawing that's supposed to be Elsa Lanchester in The Bride of Frankenstein but instead looks more like her sister or cousin.

I fell in love with Fante’s work back about 25 years ago. Started with Ask the Dust (Rebel Inc version) and consumed everything he wrote thereafter. When I went to NY on my honeymoon I spent an hour in the central library just to touch the Black Sparrow version. Yes, I was obsessed with the guy.

I still have the US uncorrected proof of this book sent to me by the super cool @jesselawrence.bsky.social. Then I purchased the deluxe signed edition in velvet filigree. Both editions are dear to my heart. Let’s see if the adaptation makes it into one its chambers too.

Oooo, I really like the trope Urban Dread. If Urban Wyrd could be a genre, then it would be Urban Dread.

THE SMALL HOURS by Bob Pastorella

Get it here, support indie presses: ghoulish.rip/product/the-...

Time to get bloody!
trope graphic for the small hours. The books cover against a background exclaiming urban dread, murder mystery, Texas backyard noir, Mafia horror, don't trust neighbors, Dracula retelling, and hot sauce.

The question is whether Amazon is in fact still the book ordering service of choice, or if book lovers are perfectly happy to go wherever the books are. Lots to consider!

I also watched The Monkey (third time now) and some other Giallo classics.

Best so far…

Yes, I agree. If you forget why you started writing, you run the risk of losing the spark & drive. I LOVE telling stories & that's what drives my writing. The ideas that excite me, the characters I create, the worlds they inhabit... it's all about the writing. Otherwise I can't think clearly.

I really feel this. That's why I've been writing stories for myself this year without any plans to publish them. It's helped my state of mind because at the end of the day, it's all about the writing.

Exactly. I felt (unsure if this is common) that I forgot why I started writing. That middle section, that fire in the gut to be read, becomes the spur that pushes you forward. But you’re not really writing for you. You’re writing for others. I think once you realise this, you get better.

I’d take a small win right now.

A beam of sunlight.
A cool beer.
An empty road.
A green traffic light.
A good movie.
An untangled stomach knot.
A perfect grape.
A smile from a stranger.
A kiss from my child.
A whisper instead of shriek.
A kind gesture.
A hush.
A day with gunfire.

How it feels as a self-published writer when you see someone has decided to give your book a chance
craigwallwork.bsky.social
I started writing to tell stories.
Then I wrote to be heard.
Then I wrote to get published.
Then I wrote to get an agent.
Then I wrote to make money.
Then I wrote to have an adaptation.
Then I wrote to keep distracted.
Then I lost my way.
Then I stopped.
Now I write because it heals.
