Christmas is not a Western story – it is a Palestinian one
Christmas is a story of empire, injustice and the vulnerability of ordinary people caught in its path.

The GIF of Willem Dafoe looking up into the sky with fright is how I picture the shepherds in Luke 2.

Whatever to make of this strange season, in this quiet morning I have time to myself with a coffee and a Ukrainian babka and dad’s Bible, and even through tears as I read the familiar passage, it is well with me.

The Gospel plain and simple.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Incredible words.

Main reason I have rarely referred to the current person in the White House by their official title is that it is not earned exclusively through election, but also requires propriety and wisdom equivalent to the stature of that office. Lacking that, I do not accord him the title.

Drawing on an idea from @philipchristman.bsky.social this week (open.substack.com/pub/philipch...), and though losing my father is the center of the story, a year in images:
• Underworld × Chicago
• Best friends
• Norway
• One of my final visits with mom and dad, with the fire of eternity in the sky

Dishwasher broke, so it’s a full afternoon of washing dishes. Better in the winter, at least, when I’m not missing a beautiful summer day or a nice afternoon for flying.

Dad died this evening. My mother, brother, and sister-in-law were with him. He died peacefully.

Thanks be to God for his life.

Dad is in hospice now. We’d surely appreciate your prayers.

Something Evangelical churches do so well is invite people to pray for their salvation, to desire it, to cherish it, and celebrate it. A woman in front of us this morning leaned over to her friend and whispered, “I prayed,” and the friend gave her the biggest, most joyful hug. Thanks be to God.
