All-time LCS featuring expansion-era teams that began play the same year ...

1986 NLCS (N.Y. Mets-Houston, both debuted in 1962)
2025 ALCS (Toronto-Seattle, both debuted in 1977)

We should all be so fortunate to find a way to spend much of our working lives doing something we're exceptionally well-suited for, and he did. RIP Heisty.

Mainly, though, he was an unforgettable character perfectly suited for a press box. And especially a baseball press box.

There's a case that the defining trait of baseball is its everydayness. And Craig was definitely an everyday sort of guy.

He very pointedly detested Maryland's traditional nemeses in men's basketball and football, traditional being from a 1980s/1990s lens.

And he was never afraid to share an opinion, which makes me think he was quite pleased with his last two Saturdays.

The man loved baseball and telling Earl Weaver stories amid his many, many gigs.

He disliked soccer --- anytime was a good time to ask if he was looking forward to whatever national team game or European club exhibition was coming to town, then basking in the inevitable rant.

Trying to fully capture and describe longtime D.C./Baltimore radio reporter Craig Heist to someone who never spent time in a press box is not an easy task.

Except for one thing: There was never, ever any doubt where Craig stood on anything.

I STAND CORRECTED

The great @d1scourse.bsky.social reports that John Thompson — yes, ECU’s John Thompson — had matching GoDaddy.com Bowl wins as interim HC in 2012 and 2013 at Arkansas State.

That’s one fewer victory than he had in two seasons at East Carolina (3-20).

Only one other pitcher had 6+ wins, no losses and an ERA over 5: Ruddy Lugo of the 2007 A's/Rays (6-0, 5.40)

A quirky historical tidbit as the season comes to an end in D.C.

Jorge Lopez, who the Nats released in early June, is the second pitcher in MLB history with 6+ decisions, no losses and an ERA over 6.

Bob Veale, 1971 Pirates (6-0, 6.99)
Jorge Lopez, 2025 Nationals (6-0, 6.57)

Per @stathead.com, Navy committed 10+ penalties in a game today (a 21-13 defeat of Rice) for only the eighth time since 1995.

Also the fourth time in that span the Mids won.

Also:

2006: at Connecticut (12 penalties; W, 41-17)
2003: Eastern Michigan (10; W, 39-7)
1997: Kent State (14; W, 62-29)

Per @stathead.com, it's the first 6-3 final in an FBS game since this classic from 2014.

The "Tennessee's current QB" vs. "Tennessee's last QB" comparison this week is certainly a study in contrasts.

It seems worth it to repeat a joke from a couple weeks ago: Based on paranoid coach logic, just how bad would UCLA be if its players had done a few more interviews in August?
