Interesting thread that I think gets Tron as a franchise. Star Trek was also embraced by geek professionals but maybe has more to offer in terms of a franchise. Like The Grid is cool but it’s a video-game perspective on cyberspace.

the short answer is that despite its box office failures, TRON is a recognizable brand, or at least recognizable enough for producers to think it has money-making potential. That begs the obvious question of "why" it's a brand at all, and I think the answer to that is interesting! Thread!

Pretty confused by how TRON became a big-budget movie franchise. Was it a bit hit when it came out? No. Did it become a big hit on video/TV? Also no. Do people have fond nostalgic memories of it? Eh kinda but not really. Was it secretly great and critically acclaimed? No again

All the “Antifa” media being put out from the government feels straight from Eddington.

Time to spend the evening watching YouTubers hear Rage Against The Machine for the first time. Literally like a drug to me.

Was not prepared for how much more of a drama this is in the back half. On one hand, great to see a character abandon fun for the reality of responsibility. On the other hand, this America we would have sent Robin Hood to jail for decades, and just been like “Oh, what a shame.”

Back in theaters to see a ROOFMAN. I’m expecting 100% less Nine Inch Nails than I got with TRON ARES last night.
ROOFMAN, the movie, starring Channing Tatum.

I was nodding like mad, full of agreement. Then #25 hit. : /

Jason Blum's take on AI sucks. an AI takeover isn't inevitable, and treating it as such (while also referring to filmmaking as "content creation," smdh) helps AI companies promote the lie that their deeply unprofitable, destructive tech is more powerful and useful than it actually is.

Every one of these passes is a persons job, by the way. Coverage should be done by a person. REVISIONS SHOULD BE DONE BY A PERSON. CONTINUITY?!? THAT SHOULD BE A PERSON’S JOB.

Like who designs a security program to look like a Jared Leto that needs a shower, shave and a haircut? In Tron’s world or in our world.

It’s probably the nine inch nails fan in me, but that was mostly an enjoyable little action movie. When it stops and Jeff Bridges explains what this movie is about (something that happens in every Tron movie), it screeches to a halt but Trent and the VFX artists pick it up for the climax. Leto who?

Back to the grid for a franchise two years older than I am.

Flynn, programming how people get dressed on the grid: “Program, make four attractive multi-racial women. Yes. Now give them hands that cut off my clothes. Then they watch as my suit rezzes on.”

Both Tron movies still look great. I would argue neither of them actually know how to execute their plot. Shaggy indie plots holding together a big Disney blockbuster.

When I die, I hope I leave my family-arcade playing some 1980s song as loud as possible so when they switch on the breaker to clean my belongings the song just starts BLASTING. And I left ALL THE LIGHTS ON.

Holy shit, Garret Hedlund just released ENCOM iOS 12 on free on the web, because “you can’t steal something designed to be free.” Is that, like, law?
