A vampiric bloodmage painted a while ago for an upcoming project 👀👀👀

Still super proud of this one, it had a really tight turnaround and I'm thrilled with how it turned out!

If you need any character spot art like this for your #rpg project, my #commissions for Q1 are fully open!

First post of the new year!

I used to do this thing on the #dnd subreddit called How Would You Use It: I'd just post whatever art piece I'd made that week for myself and ask people how they'd use it in their games, how it inspired them.

Figured I'd do it here too! SO! Ahem!

How would you use it?

For people that feel helpless, this period is so tough but there's ways to help for anyone. Go out there support Venezuelan ppl and artists living in it as they prepare for unpredictable times

Here is a starter pack of artists with commissions or donations open as well:

I made this thread not to say "I did this and that makes me a great concept artist".

I did it to say "concept artists are great and we are valuable resources and you can't just replace us with a box of wires".

Just to be clear.

Have a wonderful Monday <3
One of my favorite stories about concept art, which feels topical rn, isn't glamorous. It's from a random meeting.

The sculpting team was updating an old lion knight sculpt and struggling with vibes. They wanted more aggressive and battle-worn.

I solved their problem in 20 seconds mid-meeting. 1/

I love my job and I'll never stop doing it, unemployed, self employed, or contracted. It's important, I've seen how it helps teams thrive, and it's one of my favorite things on this earth.

Cheers <3

We solve them quickly, efficiently, and effectively. My team saved a ton of time just by having me around. We un-roadblocked the road just by working together and talking and THINKING LIKE PEOPLE DO.

We are important and we are still here and without us, everything would get bogged down and murky.

And that's the key. Not necessarily that they'd make the same choice, but they'd have a good idea and make the call and THAT'S why our job exists. And in a world where execs are filling up our corners with genAI, moments like these drive this home so much more for me.

We solve problems. 4/

Without all those skills and experiences at our disposal, this could've taken weeks. I know because I knew that it took at least a couple of weeks for them to get to the point of bringing it up in the meeting.

I made a good choice and I made it well. Anyone in my job would've done the same. 3/

Everyone was so excited, they put the new designs in the sculpt immediately (I loved my sculpting team, they were so good! Huge shoutouts to all), and we moved on to the next solve.

They worked because of all the tenets of concept art I've been taught. Communication, thought processes, semiotics 2/

We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

Concept Artists Say Generative AI References Only Make Their Jobs Harder
“The ‘early ideation stages’, when worlds are being fleshed out by writers and artists, are literally crucial to the development of a game’s vision,” said one artist.

One of my first professional projects that really helped me feel like a concept artist, and one I really wanna revisit someday.

A tiefling society living in a frozen blizzardy waste has to function somehow, right? There was so much in these, but here are a few of my favorites.

I continue to stand on 'AI is rotting your brains.'

When I was art director for Into the Motherlands, my artists got prompts from me that were anywhere from 3 lines to 4 paragraphs. All of them met our art needs no issue.
Anyone who supports this is an embarrassment. "Instead of typing it out they'll generate their idea"? Are you insane?

Call yourself whatever you want but you aren't creatives, that's for sure.
