Creating an Acorn-esque emulator and a real synthesizer. Sometimes makes games. Sturdy Games- Developer of way too many things at once, #8-Bit #Acorn #Kotlin, #CSharp, #Unity, #Java, #Javascript. #FLStudio http://sturdygames.co.uk
Warming up now, remembering all the tricks of the trade. I'd made a sprite "engine" for BASIC on the Beeb, Flickerless render via IRQ. Hardly remember any of this! Glad my spark for this is back though, it's been a while.

OK, first bit of 6502 code written in years.

It really was a different time You feel like a god just getting dots on screen or the keyboard responding. Not particularly difficult but a whole different ballgame to "Open Godot, create cube, woot!"

Hmmm, got my beeb project up and running... sorta.

Level data doesn't display but it's all there and no diff in the file from a known working state.

Do you:

a) Debug!
b) shove this under the carpet for now and start writing new ball handling code.

Welp, my old 6502 dev environment doesn't want to play ball anymore, time to upgrade it.

Maybe it should use SturdyMachine instead of BeebEm?

Ha, have been reminded of this video of @jayenkai.com's Cowbell Hero that we demoed at an event in Birmingham. I'd modded multiplayer into it and built real cowbell controllers.

The bar staff weren't too impressed with the cowbells!

Everyine had a great time!

This video stopped my kids from fighting, and one of them laughed so hard he nearly passed out. That from-the-gut laugh you hear from kids. I hear it less and less as they age, I miss it.
As a cat-haver, I knew what this was going to be immediately - still worth it.

Pondering on reviving Red Forest. It's an old project that was close to done with Steam builds shared. Life got in the way and then my team mate and good friend Alex passed away. If I do, I've got a great idea to bring the visuals up to standard, something that fits the theme nicely.

This killed me.

I'm the guy in the video now. RIP me.
@jemsmith.bsky.social and I made a 2D physics-based game in 4 days with sounds and music by Jaybooty Sutherland!

This is Fallbearers.

Here's a little clip of the other jammers playtesting it:

Trying to get Syncthing to sync a 3tb drive, but it just seems to stop scanning half way through. Perhaps I've got this set up wrong.

Switched this off for a buddy last year but he was not impressed. He'd gotten accustomed to 500ms of input lag on Mario 64. :D

After a break and a quick analysis of my synth's audio I do declare that interpolating between a saw wave and a sine wave is a naive way to filter harmonics.

Implemented a better phase accurate algorithm. Sounds great initially and no DC offsets.
Next is to fix my reverb time.
November 27, 2025 at 9:21 AM
A while ago I managed to 2x the available processing power, now running at 2x the frequency. This should result in crisper highs, but I'm not hearing that improvement - still aliasing.

I interpolate between waveform samples now but all that's done is remove some of the character of the sound. Bah!

Just discovered this.

Very yes please!

Detective Instinct releases in just TWO DAYS! On Steam and Nintendo Switch 👍

If narrative adventure games that feel a little like something you might have played on the DS back in the day are your thing, don't miss it 👁️

Back to this version of the game. I have added the score board gfx and related code to calculate the score etc. Game running at 50fps, still need to do tile animations. youtu.be/A6hO-ZApOjQ #GameDev #RetroGame

Remembering my friend Alex, who passed away a few years ago. We never got to finish our project, Red Forest- and he never got to finish Pub Crawl. I'd like to honour him and finish Pub Crawl when times allow, until then I'll build my synth and watch you lot make great stuff!

I'm not big on crypto but had some stuff floating around.

Me: "I haven't said or done anything weird today yet and it's nearly 3pm!"

Me at 3:05pm: *Makes loud fart noise*

What's even funnier is that my colleagues don't bat an eyelid at it anymore.

"That was 2 weeks ago, I am a different person now!"

My eldest, 9.

Funny thing is at this age 2 weeks can actually make a massive difference so she's not exactly wrong.

I had a strange dream. I was in a Haussmanian building in Paris. It had been burgled.

Jean Reno was there and I got into trouble for interrupting the set only to have Reno apologise to me when I figure out how the burglar got in via the top floor of the building.

We were chums after.

Someone mentioned an enhanced Revs experience. I've been using Revs as a test for my emulator. The game works but no audio and unhandled interrupts end up throwing the games palette code out.

None of that is needed to proceed though since those are the "enhance" targets.

Hmmmmm......
