My mom is a RN and has worked as a caregiver with HS-aged, extremely physically disabled folks, I know this is absolutely the case.

If I wanted to go all "college seminar" on this, to follow along with @jamellebouie.net point, we valorize the kinds of work where a man imposes his will upon some object or makes something, but the kinds of work that require patience or emotional intelligence are feminized and seen as "less than".

I work IN A LITERAL FACTORY, and being a chain restaurant server for 9 years was much closer to being blue collar than what I do now. No one is sticking recorders in the faces of the people *working* in the rural diner, it's always the people with the luxury of having eggs and coffee at 9:30 am.

I'm going to be more blunt about it, these dorks jerk off to the idea of blue collar meaning "work boots and jeans" and not, say, nail techs, waiters, baristas, or massage therapists, and they should look within themselves and the nearest DIY YouTube video instead of gooning all over the discourse.

Also, I think this is probably more about the fact that the last good/great—or at least pop-culturally relevant—Trek show and films came out when Gen X was probably in their teens and early adulthood, and that is a group that is trending Republican, unfortunately.
