Nah. Don’t give credit to people who can’t straight shit this.

THE NAKED GUN (25) is funny but feels like Vichy art.

It is fucking telling that you cannot trust mainstream media to say that Trump lying about Portland is the biggest story. Our country is insane, and rich people who control the media and allow this to not be treated as are the villains. The media will not save us from an insane king.

NOBODY 2: not so much a bad film as one that doesn’t get to breathe. Everything would be better if it was a little longer and more free form.
damonhoux.bsky.social
Watching NOBODY 2. Often people want to cast Colin Hanks as a nice guy like his father, but he - like a lot of legacy talent/nepos - are way more interesting when they are playing people entitled/arrogant/slightly off because they think things should be handed to them. They make good villains.

One of the best parts of the DGA podcast is finding out stuff like that Christopher Nolan has watched THE CURSE.

I’m sorry, I can’t support a political party that doesn’t know how math works.

Up? Every pre-1980 female filmmaker. Lupino, Arnzer, Loden, Akerman, Varda to some extent. Penny Marshall, Streisand not so much.
Downward slope: every music video director, including Jonze, Gondry and Fincher.

throwing this prompt from Twitter in here. what examples you got?
tweet by @Caol_MacCormaic that reads, uncs of film twitter: what are some movies that are canonical now but were basically unknown when we were coming up? like Come and See or Possession. inversely: what are some movies or filmmakers that seem to have fallen off? (Takashi Miike comes to mind)

One of the underlying problems with AI is exactly the same problem with being rich right now: it doesn’t have taste. It will probably never have taste. You have to work for it and the goal is antithetical to working.

Watched the Red Letter Media recap of modern STAR WARS, and I appreciated it, even if it’s way too negative on THE LAST JEDI for my taste. They also get into a problem with ANDOR: It’s great but it doesn’t really fit with A NEW HOPE. Partly because the brand has become everything and nothing.

M3GAN 2.0: The best sequence is basically stolen from UPGRADE. It’s not good. Really need more movies that don’t think computers are magic that will eventually think for themselves and have emotions and more movies that show their limitations and/or their literalness.

At my old job someone gave me this basket of cup of noodles. They’re all expired, but I just like how it looks at this point.

Near my place there was a building that promised to be a new weed store but never opened. The Pineapple Express near my Trader Joe’s recently closed and another weed store near where I work is closing next week. The weed store boom is over, it seems.

science fiction movies fit but don’t into this where it’s JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH or TWISTERS where the end result is they accomplish something that has no effect on the real world so it’s totally uninteresting.

Things I often think about watching modern blockbusters:
- Do characters have goals?
- Do characters or the structure have arcs?
- Do character believably exist outside of the story?
- Is the protagonist interesting outside of the narrative? (and sometimes inside it)
95/100 no on all of this.

ROCKY HORROR: A rock opera pastiche, my biggest complaint is that it doesn’t believe in anything so much as combines Bowie, King Kong, ‘50s sci-fi, TEXAS CHAIN SAW, then-queerness into a gumbo. SHOCK TREATMENT proves it was a fluke. Tim Curry unassailable. Seeing with a packed house is better.

Yes, but they control the means of distribution.

"There's truth underneath all this fake outrage. Conservatives really are at a disadvantage in pop culture because most creative people are liberals, which has always been true & probably always will be. While MAGA has had some success building a culture machine, what it produces is mostly banal."

One of the problems with this film is a problem with a lot of modern movies: No one has a goal that is an actual goal. Everyone is going to meet someone or on their way someplace else.

I wonder if SILVERADO would have worked better with actual Western stars. Since it’s kinda playing a greatest hits package, it might go over better with Woody Strode, Robert Mitchum, etc. (this works better if it was made in 1975).

The President said Portland looks like a war zone and I know the overton of it all, but seriously, things that can be refuted by… everything? Stupid, lying, is being Truman Showed, whatever we are an absurd nation if that isn’t disqualifying (we’re absurd).

Everyone can set aside partisanship, psychologizing, pathologizing, whatever, and—I would hope—still see that it’s incredibly dangerous for a political leader to be this disconnected from the real conditions in the country.

Trump: "I don't know what could be worse than Portland. You don't even have stores anymore. They don't even put glass up. They put plywood on their windows."

I don’t think it’s a death sentence, but when writers and directors get involved in television - if it’s not theirs - the job is less about creating and more about problem solving and at a certain point TV writers fucking suck at movies, hence a lot of the LOST writers and directors movies.

Watching TRON: LEGACY, and Hollywood has for a while now had a protagonist program. A tech bro’s kid who’s for free shit but then is excited to play gales for real, but everything there is poorly backwards engineered.
