People dont want to join different servers just to feel safe and follow all the people they want. That already exists in Mastodon, Discourse, Reddit, blogs, etc...

Plus trolls DO NOT RESPECT BOUNDARIES. They will find a way in.

There are no tech-only solutions.

Any tech solution will just be gamed by them for this very reason. Auto-banning someone who shows up on too many block lists? They create enough alts to get their targets auto-banned

There is no tech solution. You need people versed in how trolls operate to ban them.

Their whole existence is in finding the ways to obfuscate their intentions to people who arent their targets in a way that they seem rational and reasonable and that their targets are overreacting and irrational

i've been on mastodon since 2017. and one big ongoing story there is the constant drama, trauma, and burnout among administrators of instances. it's just not work that a normal person can easily handle on their own.

It’s not sustainable. People don’t want to constantly server hop. There’s no economic model except for begging for money. Email is largely Apple, Gmail, Outlook. Sure the protocol is open similar to ATProto but it’s centralized or concentrated similar to Bluesky
