Hey, just an aside - please don’t feel like you have to follow me because I followed you - you don’t, this isn’t a trade.

That’s it. I could probably discuss more about why I “follow” people1️⃣, but that’s just really subtext.

A friend of mine who gets a LOT more crank contacts than I do has regularly started seeing "ChatGPT/Grok confirmed my theory" or even "I asked ChatGPT and it told me" type of psychoceramics. The sort of person who is apt to slide down the rabbithole is just getting encouraged by the chatbots.

Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

This is just the second in a series (with more to come) that will show that even in a state where more of our rights are protected, this tech allows anyone with access to circumvent the will of voters and the will of legislators to spy on the private lives of Spokanites.

Flock cameras are not regular license plate readers that take photos only when an infraction is suspected. They are always recording the information of everyone that passes it — whether they’re committing a crime or not. It’s that power that led us to spend over five months reporting on Flock.

This short (The Big Snooze, 1946) is probably one of the ten best cartoons ever made. Take it from me: a freak of nature.

And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

If you have ever thought that my journalism or my first book were net positives for the world, understand that they probably would not exist if I did not have a spouse who paid the mortgage. If I'd been a solo earner/parent, I likely would have left criticism, journalism or book writing long ago.

Cute. You’re confusing loud angry and aggressive opinions with self-awareness. They’re not the same. Far from woke bro.

Literally buying one copy of a book at your local indie bookstore can mean the difference in whether they buy future books from that author.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

The first time terrorists used planes to attack Americans wasn’t on 9/11 or at Pearl Harbor. It was the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 when white supremacists flew a dozen planes to drop turpentine or nitroglycerin bombs on Black Americans.

Viola Fletcher was there.

Also? Points for how well the poster conveys a sense of the film, without revealing much of anything beyond that. Aesthetically cool, and an effective piece of communication. Good poster art is art, related to and separate from being advertising.
So apparently there was a horror movie released last month called Good Boy that basically tells a ghost story entirely from a dog's POV as his owner becomes the target of malevolent spirits and yeah I definitely gotta watch this now 👀

Also 10/10 poster

this cracks me up since thrift used to be seen as a foundational American value. there are like a half dozen Ben Franklin aphorisms about that, but I guess that's not the stuff we're supposed to take from the founding fathers.

Just dropped this elsewhere, so boosting, since the illegal-orders discussion is back in the news: there's some great GI Rights Hotline postcards and leaflets for printing and distributing, but here's one with the absolute basic message and phone number as a label template.
I've seen a bunch of people sharing leaflet and postcard-sized versions of the GI Rights Hotline info, but I haven't seen any templates designed for label printing, so 30 seconds with the Avery template maker made the simplest possible version with the absolute basics (to be seen from a distance).

There are, however, non-economic 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 of these issues and we need to start rejecting those framings.

I mean just look at this profligate spending...

On date

OH wow, you have the same birthday! That’s funny!

…the same year? Ok thats kinda cool, least no “age gap” hahaha

…the same hour? Um…oooooook

…and minute? Ok ummmm *starts flagging waiter down*

Your mom’s name is WHAT!??

…Leia?
Serious inquiry, because I’ve heard differing opinions on this.

Would you all date someone with the same birthday as you ? Why or why not ?
