In 1976, after Southern California Edison announced the withdrawal of plans for the largest coal fired power plant in the USA atop of the biggest undeveloped southwestern coal deposit, some people in Kanab, Utah burned an effigy of Robert Redford who was part of the coalition opposing the project.
New York Times, April 19, 1976.
Redford Burned in Effigy For Opposing Power Plant
KANAB, Utah, April 18 (AP)
—More than 500 local residents cheered as they burned a blond. wigged effigy of Robert Red-ford, the movie actor who opposed construction of a $3.5 billion power plant that was dropped last week.
People in this southern Utah county seat near the proposed Kaiparowits power plant wanted the project completed, because they thought that it would help their town economi. callv.
"This is the time and day that we, the people of Kane County, have chosen to put a torch to skunkman Redford, a self-proclaimed voice of the nypocritical obstructionists,"
said John Nelson, the County Engineer, before the Redford
effigy was burned last night.
When those who came to watch the mock lynching started toward their homes, some stayed behind to roast hotdogs over the glowing coals of the dummy.
Mr. Redford, an Utah resident, had no immediate comment.

I, along w/@blkahn.bsky.social @eroston.bsky.social, try to capture the big picture of what's already happened & what's at stake.
