#TIL that Walmart owns the Game retail chain here in South Africa, and they’re slowly planning to replace shops with Walmarts. This feels *wrong*. Walmart is such an American chain in my mind that I can’t imagine it in the African context, not even South African.

Game shutting down stores in South Africa
Massmart is considering the closure of “around” 20 stores, which will potentially be redeveloped into Walmarts.

On the one hand, I’m sure the RAs involved learned a lot!

But on the other, well-trained LLMs are perfectly positioned to do the grunt work, and do it well.
"In sum, through an extensive (and costly) validation process, we have demonstrated that GPT-5 mini performs very well at recovering the ground truth data. It is clearly better than highly trained graduate students at this specific information retrieval task."

I think it's happening. After paying for #ChatGPT Pro for the past couple of years, I'm switching to #Claude. It's a little sad because I've curated a working "relationship" with ChatGPT, but Claude is smoother to use. I love the coworking functionality, and the Chrome extension is awesome! #genAI

As someone who organises her home library of over a thousand books based on what I learned working at a library (author’s last name for fiction, Dewey for nonfiction), I am now tempted to reorganise my kitchen. All hail the Chewy Decimal System!

The first thing my mom said when I told her the Pope had died was that JD Vance did it. And when I relayed this comment to my friends, many of them said their moms said the same thing.

Huh?

I don't know why I tried venturing into Edusky. The fear-mongering is depressing.

Sure, you can take your exam from home. But that doesn't mean we won't be watching you.

I've decided to properly take up Bluesky for exactly this reason. I left Twitter for a reason; I will stop using Meta social media platforms if they also continue down the same route. Just like I try to avoid hateful people in meatspace, I also want to steer clear online.
I was interviewed at CES this morning. We mentioned that consumers will decide whether they want to be on a platform that is “unfiltered free speech “ or “ moderated”. I mentioned that I loved @bsky.app , and spontaneously people started clapping 🔥.
