In 2019 we were assured they were in power for a decade
The UK's looming threat of a Reform government is rightly terrifying, but it is kinda funny that every time I see the Tory leader in the news I'm like 'oh wait that party still exists?'

Big index cleanup on my side project. Reminder: don't cross the streams - cross referencing models from other apps on your migrations.

In further news, the US Coast Guard - now renamed Die Kriegsmarine - will embark on a U-Boat offensive to sink shipping on the Atlantic routes
Behind this important reversal is a member of the Coast Guard who saw what was happening and had the courage to leak it to the press. That person deserves serious praise.

Software developers: the house is barely standing, the roof leaks, the plumbing is shot, there's dry rot in the walls, the locks are all broken, whole thing will collapse in a strong wind

Product manager: OK but I want a new kitchen extension and I need new wallpaper in the spare bedroom

Hearing a new version of PHP is out is like hearing that a band you followed back in the early 2000s, that you haven't listened to in years, and who you assumed broke up maybe 10 years ago, just put out a new album.

Does Keith Richards still own the copyright on it
Known as “Hurrian Hymn No. 6,” this is the oldest complete #song known to humankind.

Discovered in an excavation in northern #Syria in the 1950s & written in #cuneiform in the #Hurrian language, the song is believed to date to at least 1400 B.C.

Scrum is the Trojan horse of agile frameworks: enables top-down micromanagement in the guise of superficially empowering workers. Genuinely one of the worst things to happen to the craft of software development (before LLMs came along, that is).

Played around with the alpha #htmx 4. Very rough around the edges - it's not going to be released for a year - but wanted to get an idea of major changes down the line. Probably the most impactful is explicit inheritance, not a bad thing but maybe larger codebases might need a shim.

Cabinet of Chamberlains
On Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy’s refusal to review the BBC Board membership of Robbie Gibb, Lib Dem culture spokes Anna Sabine MP said:

"This is the wrong choice...Gibb isn’t fit to serve on the BBC Board, & the BBC Charter gives the Government the power to sack him." PM should step in, she says.

The US Democrats are the equivalent of the Russian Communist Party. Not because they are in any way communist, but because they provide a useful fig-leaf of democratic legitimacy to the regime, as the RCP does for Putin.
Hahahahah they were just playing a trick on us where they’d pretend to fight back until we voted for them, and then immediately cave www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

US is really selling itself as a tourist mecca. Choose between its favourite theme parks, Airport Departure Lounge World or ICE Detention Center World
atlanta is the busiest airport and hub in the country. this is astonishing
Waiting for a very delayed flight to Atlanta & the pilot (Scott!) has become everyone's best friend, hanging out amongst the people. He's let us know that Atlanta is only allowing 30 flights an hour, when it's usually 120.

Obviously frustrating but also enjoying how much Scott is relishing this.

Just updated side project to Postgres 18. One little hiccup: volume path for Docker image in k8s should be /var/lib/postgresql not /var/lib/postgresql/data. Otherwise all good.

This was less of an issue in the 1980s when we had max headroom
Late period Osborne: interest rates at zero and 50-80bn of headroom: and his priority was “don’t invest”.
