Feels like the US economy is like Wile E Coyote running over the cliff right now, and the EU starting a massive trade war + selling US debt or whatever it takes might be the thing that makes it look down

The Saudis and Israelis and Russians buy US Senators and Representatives by the dozen, surely the EU could do the same? I'm sure we could club together to buy a couple Supreme Court judges and a Ted Cruz or Chuck Schumer or two, it's got to be cheaper than aircraft carriers

"Make Heaven Crowded": a classic Italian giallo from 1973. Starring Helmut Berger, Claudia Cardinale and John Saxon.
Make Heaven Crowded is an insane title.

Frameworks (Django, React, etc) were a way to allow humans to build maintainable, reusable code quickly. They're an inefficient abstraction for AI written code. Likewise dynamic languages like PHP/Ruby/Python (JS/TS will persist because browser, for now).

“…neither rhyme nor reason.”

We are currently in a situation where precedents and norms and laws and rules and theories offer no assistance.

Honestly the whole thing about the Peace Prize, Board of Peace etc is nuts, but this is window-dressing. Trump's handlers genuinely want to build an empire in the West, this is their best shot at doing so, he's just the convenient figurehead to bring the rubes along.

Much of the antagonism against AI is driven by ordinary working people who have had to deal with chaotic disruption for over a decade: financial crisis, politics, pandemic and now...this.

AI hustlers/boosters are mostly privileged SV types who are absolutely incapable of understanding this.

People who dole out praise for someone's AI prompted slop - art, code, music, whatever - are the same credulous idiots who call Musk a genius for the hard work of his engineers
An adult has spent their entire life knowing, deep down, that the way to get better at something is to do that something.

And then they start using genAI and this very fundamental part of being human becomes confusing and inscrutable to them.

Finally, Ben Shapiro has found someone he can make wet
But he didn't get an invitation to Ben Shapiro's podcast.

Gavin Newsom sought Ben Shapiro out for Newsom's podcast, then got bulldozed on his own turf.

It's far, far more pathetic than going on Shapiro's podcast.

This is perhaps why AWS announced their European only cloud service the other day: they are hedging on a complete severance of transatlantic ties
🇪🇺🇬🇱 Europe will break all economic ties with the US if it tries to seize Greenland, — FT

📍The French Finance Minister warned his American counterpart about this. He stressed: any step towards seizing the island would be tantamount to crossing a "red line".

Doesn't this just make him an elongated Joe Rogan in a wig
Newsom says whatever he thinks the guy in front of him wants to hear and yes that also means all those funny meme social media posts y'all love.

"Why write code when Claude can do it for you?" "Why learn a foreign language when Google translate exists?"

Why walk when you can take an Uber everywhere?

I wonder how Robert Heinlein would feel if (like his character in Door into Summer) he woke up in 2026 to find a throwaway invented word in one of his novels was the cause of a political crisis in the UK

My impression of the US political system is that it's a very messy, chaotic beast and most of the time that's not a good thing (compared to European peers) but if you have a mad president who wants to rule the country like a tyrant that messy, chaotic beast might be the thing that saves you
You can (and we do) walk through all the procedural and legal and practical ways to stop this, but some people simply don't want to ever reach "we win" as the scenario's outcome. They'll fly into a rage at any answer that doesn't boil down to he's an omnipotent unstoppable god, resistance is futile.
the question to ask about this is, okay, he wants to cancel the midterms. how does he get the VA state board of elections to cancel the midterms? how does he get the georgia board of elections to do it? how does he convince republican house members to quit their jobs and give up their paychecks?

I’m not going to share a link, but within 24hrs of being published my illustration has been fed into AI and used to generate a video of this dinosaur, and frankly I just need this world to stop.
Seriously, what is the fucking point?
Introducing Xenovenator espinosai, a new troodontid dinosaur with some fascinating cranial anatomy. I had the honour of being approached to create the illustration for this week’s official announcement. (1/3) #SciArt

Let's take the vibe coders at their word. You can build a full SAAS in a weekend, near-zero effort, no more cost than a Claude subscription.

Um...and? What's your moat? Why should I pay for your SAAS when I can just ask Claude to copy what you've done?

The real winner? Anthropic.

Oh cool a death's head insignia which paramilitary death squad has used that historically I have no idea
Their challenge coin is a laughing skeleton wearing a crown, with vultures on it's shoulders.

Looks less like something you'd give "law enforcement" and more like something you'd give to the death squad of a king.
