Soft Cell were the first group whose preferred mode of expression was not the album or the 45 but the 12-inch single, and this compilation is one of the half-dozen or so greatest releases of the ‘80s. #daveball

We are so sad to hear that Dave Ball, the keyboard genius of Soft Cell, has died. He was an electronic pop pioneer and with Marc Almond made a unique catalogue of songs, completely original in sound and content. Our love and condolences go to Marc and all those close to Dave. Neil and Chris xx

Google Ngram reveals barely minimal publication of the phrase “glam rock” prior to 1980; “glitter rock” usage exceeding “glam rock” from the late ’60s until mid ’80s; and “glam metal” not appearing at all until late ’80s. NY Times searches pretty much confirm this hunch: No “glam rock” until 1989.
