New thing!

"A house in Philadelphia. In the room the radio, warm and fuzzy FM radio hits, a Phillies game and radio dramas. To the left a TV with St. Elsewhere, Family Ties and North & South. To the right , someone is playing on a ColecoVision or an Atari 2600."

Having lunch in Syd Barrett's old pub (not a remarkable pub for any other reason) and they're playing a cover versions of The Roches 'Hammond Song' which has a single singer and no harmonies. It's not bad but why? why would anyone choose to make or play such a thing?

Once again I am begging everyone to drop the tvtropesisms and return to critical theory, which may require some thinking to engage with, but at least has something to say about art & culture and is not relentlessly glib.
No. The correct way to understand this is to stop trying to make things fit together. You can watch different people playing Sherlock Holmes, in entirely different stories, without trying to make it add up. Stories are a dressing up box, not a jigsaw.

Is this cheese grater conscious? Many users feel they're talking to a real person. Scientists say it's time to consider whether they're onto something.

My only Urdu-language pick, and an artist I am really excited to explore. Such a beautifully sad piece of music.

Stereolab - Melodie is a Wound (UK/France/Spain, 2025)

I will confess that the new Pulp album this year led to me taking way too long to check out the new Stereolab album.

So it was the year 2001 and my mate Jamie was going on holiday to Prague with his girlfriend, but she failed her finals and had to resit, and he offered me her bus ticket. Yes, we took the bus from London to Prague. When we got to the Czech border we handed over our passports to the bus driver... 1/

you'd think the forced displacement of 10 million people from one of the oldest centres of civilisation in human history would get a little more news attention than beltway journalists writing essays on how Olivia Nuzzi is a genius because they want to bone her and you'd be wrong

Kelly Lee Owens - Dreamstate (Wales, 2024)

The perfect sweet spot between ambient dreampop and minimal techno, this is what I hoped music would sound like in the 21st century.

Would be good to have a labeller for people who post "didn't happen", or maybe just a block list.

I was once in a KFC in Zhuhai and they played a recording of a small child singing "Happy Birthday To You" (in Chinese) on repeat for at least half an hour, that's how long it took before I could not bear it any more, it may have been on all day.
The onslaught of piped in Xmas music is workers rights issue. It was THE thing I complained to management about when I worked @ B&N.
If we had to hear “Baby Shark” everywhere we went for two whole months out of the year we’d throw a fit, right?

And rightfully so.

So tell me, why do we put up with it when the song is “Frosty the Snowman”?

I wonder what proportion of British people under the age of 30 know who Cliff Richard is? He was such a fixture of the culture when I was young, when he dies it's going to be weird having to explain who he was and why he was so popular to my kids. #totp

Sho Madjozi - Chale (South Africa, 2023)

An underheralded aspect of the 2020s so far is Africa leading the way in pop innovation - the production on this is like nothing else.
