FUN FOR THE SUMMER

It's important to me to tell love stories of people with schizoaffective as we're often only cast as the villains in thrillers. I want this story to be one where it influences the plot, but never the lovingness. I hope people see themselves in Mae.

A white background with a quote above a paint streak boxed in on the sides that reads: Breathe. My jaw wouldn't relax. It had been tight all day, clamped down so hard it ached almost from the minute I had woken up. It had been another day of starting with the as needed anxiety med. I had taken two of the three doses I was allotted daily by that point. Under the brackets it says: Jack Greyson @daphnemwrites A white background with a quote above a paint streak boxed in on the sides that reads: Breathe. My skin was buzzing In the past it often did that. It would buzz like wasps were trapped under my skin and desperate to get out. Every nerve would feel stretched beyond imagination. I would begin to believe something evil was trapped under my skin, begging for release. Tactile hallucinations they were called. Before I knew that term I called them demons. Under the brackets it says: Mae Carpenter @daphnemwrites A collage of four images and text in the middle. From the top left clockwise: a woman sewing with a sewing machine, rose gold balloon letters that say love, a woman in a sweater and underwear posed suggestively, and 6 light pink hearts on a lighter pink background. A white and pink background with minimal decoration. It says Fun for the Summer. Mae and Jack haven't talked in four years, but when she comes to stay with their mutual friend and Jack's roommate Will, sparks fly. Now they can't keeo their hands off of each other and are providing the chaos and stability the other needs. There's just two problems...Mae is technically married to Will for his benefits. And she returns to Seattle at the end of the summer.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Currently listening to Fang Si-Chi's First Love Paradise. It's masterfully done in how deeply uncomfortable it makes you feel at times. It's so beautiful written though which only adds to the sense of horror and at times disgust. Disgust at men, (internalized) misogyny, and the system. #booksky

Currently reading A Perfect Day to be Alone and I definitely lean more genre than litfic, so sometimes I read litfic and wonder "what even is the plot here?" That being said, I'm enjoying the book. Just like, I'm 52% through it and wondering where are we going with this? #booksky

I have to go to the dentist on Tuesday (and the 17th) and I just....oh gods. I have a massive phobia of the dentist and having depression mode dental hygiene practices doesn't help. But I'm pretty sure I have a cavity and I need a cleaning. This era of my life I'm putting my dental health first.

If you are on the academic job market this year, I think it's worth reading this post + consider inquiring about this at places you interview.

Schools that sign this "compact" will be–by nature of what they will now be exposed to–a very different place from the place you applied to. #AcademicSky

I thought I'd put the administration's proposed "compact" with universities in context, so I wrote the blog post below.

It's especially for journalists covering this story!

Many details about how the compact itself works and why the administration has retreated to this strategy.

Would you agree to FORMALLY SURVEY THE IDEOLOGIES OF FACULTY IN EVERY DEPARTMENT OF YOUR COLLEGE, and to "transform or abolish" any that "belittle" "conservative ideas"?

That's what Trump's "Compact for Academic Excellence." demands.

" Signatories commit themselves to revising governance structures as necessary to create such an environment, including but not limited to transforming or abolishing institutional units that purposefully punish, belittle, and even spark violence against conservative ideas. Given the importance of academic freedom to the marketplace of ideas, signatories shall adopt a policy protecting academic freedom in classrooms, teaching, research, and scholarship. Such policies also shall recognize that academic freedom is not absolute, and universities shall adopt policies that prevent discriminatory, threatening, harassing, or other behaviors that abridge the rights of other members of the university community. Signatories commit to rigorous, good faith, empirical assessment of a broad spectrum of viewpoints among faculty, students, and staff at all levels and to sharing the results of such assessments with the public; and to seek such a broad spectrum of viewpoints not just in the university as a whole, but within every field, department, school, and teaching unit. As a fellow Cal State faculty member who has been informed that our *personal information* may have been shared with the EEOC over the same phony allegations, I want to say ⚡️I 100% SUPPORT Newsom’s plan to instantly deny state support to any school joining this authoritarian ‘compact’⚡️

As Banned Books Week nears, Philip Nel warns against the ways institutional book banning efforts lead to self-censorship

“Having one's book banned is not a prize. It's an assault on the right to read. And, worse, official acts of censorship beget quiet censorship, done in anticipation of criticism.

As frequently banned author Malinda Lo writes, "Self-censorship is possibly the most difficult kind of censorship to fight because it is generally not publicly admitted. It's done quietly, in private. If nobody knows it's happening, how can anyone object?"”

Even a passing knowledge of Black history will make clear that not only was this level of destruction possible, it was inevitable. “Did you know they’d shut down US AID?” I mean these are the same people who closed all public schools in a county rather than desegregate. Yes. Yes I did.

I don't think the people expressing surprise about things the Trump administration is doing understand how absolutely fucking crazymaking each of your posts is for Black and Indigenous folks who called *all of this* and sat through people talking about "respecting norms" for years

Charlie Kirk: Hero of ‘Civil Discourse’ or Fount of Division?

Pointing to the slain activist’s inflammatory statements about minority groups, some are pushing back—at their own peril—against the right’s framing of him as an emblem of quality discourse. https://bit.ly/42clCiM
