‘Senzeni-na? Senzeni-na? What have we done? What have we done?’ It was the most beautiful music on earth, sung in a vile place.”

Re: phones before they became attention sucking rectangles

I had one that had infrared connection so you could use it as a remote or, as we did, use it to send mp3 files very slowly. We would place our phones so their ir sensors aligned and carry on with life as an mp3 made its way across the void
what were they like back then

Tonight the holiday ends
Tomorrow I journey back to the virtual office

I should've sat on the beach more
I should've read more novels
I should've booked more leave

Fires have been raging in Pearly Beach and Stanford. Started on the 4th of Jan and as of this evening still visible from Hermanus

A separate fire broke out on the mountain in Hermanus on the 10th and I saw an Oryx helicopter dumping water which was a new experience

"my favourite online metronome has monetized"
My favorite online metronome has monetized and while I understand that one cannot expect useful resources to be free, $3 a week seems insane.

And the new free 'default' setting is different to the default of the previous free version I've been using so I can't even use the free default anymore.

In SA I used to too

Banned on public streets in the UK so I ended up selling it. Closest feeling to flying in my dreams - flexing your body *just right* to accelerate or stop

Wondrous
I know exactly one person who has ever ridden an electric unicycle to work, and he also 100% buys pizza at gas stations

"Math is one of the few areas where truth can be automated"
You may not know this, but a cool thing for math AI is that there are now logic software systems where you formalize a proof and it tells you if the proof works. The downside is it's laborious, but the upside is automatic verification. Math is one of the few areas were truth can be automated.

Gemini fast bested ChatGPT 5.2 on my stupid challenge which started with just "TNACBAG"

On the third bit of additional context (same given to both) Gemini cracks it, ChatGPT still off

If you hit a neutron star with a hammer it would ring like a bell
resting on a neutron star... the gravity pulls down like a weighted blanket, the surface is warm and the little millimetre-scale deviations are fun to run your fingers across, the view above is a hypnotising cascade of blueshifted starlight rushing overhead
