Why do officers of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency need to be armed with lethal weapons?

Serious question.

@ashens.bsky.social Good morning. Merry Christmas. All these years, still excellent.

The Infinite Monkey Cage was genuinely one of the best things the BBC produced, and if it continues without Robin, it will be infinitely poorer for it.

I can't overstate how much respect I have for @robinince.bsky.social for standing up for human rights, for equality, and for kindness.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

While a theoretical path exists for the US President acting as an individual to sue the BBC, the legal doctrines of foreign sovereign immunity and the First Amendment's high protections for speech about public officials make such a lawsuit exceptionally difficult to win.

Yesterday was the first baseball game I'd ever watched in my life. So I've been watching baseball for 2 days and I already hate the Dodgers.

The new "cheaper" Tesla cars don't have any kind of radio in them. No AM, no FM. You shouldn't buy cars from fascists anyway, but car radios are often becoming many peoples last broadcast receiver.

I happened to have a spare Mac so now I can archive Computer Chronicles tapes even faster with my new Dedicated Digitization Station.

Three lost episodes of the Computer Chronicles have been recovered, and more are coming.

Watch them here. archive.org/details/@dav...

@lgr-yt.bsky.social I'm a volunteer for the Internet Archive. I know you've been interested in episodes of the Computer Chronicles in the past. I thought you might want to know we're slowly adding previously "lost" episodes found on tape.

It's that time of year again when I remind everyone who bought a new iPhone that they can transfer their stuff from their old one using a cable instead of wirelessly. It's faster.

Political violence is a symptom of a diseased state, not the cause. When peaceful avenues for change are systematically destroyed, do not be surprised when people seek other paths. A regime that rules by force and fear relinquishes its right to condemn violence used against it.

There's nothing wrong with flying your flag as an act of patriotism. But the people doing this on poles they don't own (and which are not flagpoles), aren't patriotic, they're nationalistic. They're not celebrating their country, they're advertising their hate of others.

This Friday and Saturday in Mountain View! Come see an exhibit about old British computers from some equally old guy.

And there's some other stuff there too, I guess.

Oh, this sucks. Tom Lehrer supposedly retired from comedy songwriting because he couldn't come up with anything more satirical than real life.

What must he have thought about today.

Rest in peace. You will live forever in my music library.

VPN endpoints with the lowest latency to the UK are in the Netherlands, specifically, Amsterdam.

Ireland, Germany, and Sweden are also pretty close and therefore good choices, but the Netherlands apparently has a good pipe.

Just in case that's useful to anyone.

The AI upscaling used for the Live Aid rebroadcast became obvious almost immediately, with long shots of the crowd appearing as if viewed through some kind of diamond-shaped screen door effect.

I guess I understand why they thought they had to do it. But a simple scale would have worked just fine.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.
