I think a lot of well meaning good government types should be thinking closely about Peter Mandelson, and how dangerous it is for a politician to earn enough to give them a taste for yachts, but not enough to afford a yacht of their own.

A guy in Costa this morning asked for a cappucino with half oat milk and half semi-skim. He said it stops it tasting "too oaty." All I thought was; this kind of thinking lead to the fall of Rome, according to Gibbon anyways. So now I am that meme about men thinking about the Roman Empire too much.

the only reason to encourage the natalists (despite evidence that no policy can bring up the birth rate) is that the policies they *think* can bring up the birth rate are pretty good anyway -- better childcare, longer parental leave etc.
