I'm not sure how much work "pending the availability of funds" is doing here, but I will be optimistic.

"NIH will fund the Stillbirth Research Consortium for more than $37 million over five years, pending the availability of funds, with $750,000 in co-funding from the Department of Health and Human Services." www.nih.gov/news-events/...

It is not the first time such on-the-nose grief has been observed in this endangered population. In January, orca J35 carried a dead baby for at least five days. J35 had previously made world headlines in 2018 when she carried her dead calf for 17 days and 1,000 miles. From @kuow.org

Acetaminophen remains a safe pain relief option during pregnancy. Despite recent unfounded claims, there’s no clear evidence linking prudent use to fetal development issues. ACOG's guidance remains. When needed in pregnancy, acetaminophen should be used in moderation, after consulting a doctor.

When we pretend that stillbirth (and pregnancy loss) is nonexistent, the natural urge after is to blame.

This is a very sad story of an intended parent blaming the surrogate -- even though IVF doubles if not triples the risk of stillbirth.
garnethenderson.com
An extreme case, to be sure, but one that illustrates just how thorny surrogacy is—something many people prefer not to think about.
The Baby Died. Whose Fault Is It?
When her son died in utero, a venture capitalist went to extremes to punish her surrogate.

Structural inequities are key drivers of infant deaths.

"Every single infant loss represents a family devastated, a community impacted, and a future cut short."

I wrote a little piece about our (maddening) lack of routine autopsies to actually figure out what causes stillbirth, but our routinization of those autopsies when the goal is to arrest a (marginalized) woman.
us.theconversation.com
Autopsies are rare when the goal is general medical insight about the causes of stillbirth and pregnancy loss more generally, but they are seemingly routine when criminal consequences are possible, according to legal scholar. buff.ly/qw83y3E @jillwieberlens.bsky.social, University of Iowa
Fetal autopsies could help prevent stillbirths, but too often they are used to blame mothers for pregnancy loss
The rate of stillbirth in the US is stubbornly high. Routine fetal autopsies for stillbirths can help reveal what’s causing them.

Took a little support group field trip to Woolly Mammoth DC to see Riki Lindhome’s Dead Inside last night. It was so funny and had so much heart. I love this hat (and this amazing Mary Todd Lincoln fan from President Lincoln’s Cottage)! www.woollymammoth.net/productions/...
