Things are really hard right now, and sometimes words are insufficient balms, but when artists add a melody and a beat, their words help me a lot more than they otherwise would. I collected some songs that bring me hope / bring me into a mindset of hope. It was a salve tonight, so I decided to share

We need more journalists who don’t pretend the rising wave of right-wing inspired transphobia, racism, misogyny, predation, authoritarianism, homophobia and corruption is something they should shrug at and say “we can’t take sides”

Which ofc is taking a side.

He too, btw, is not journalist himself

It’s yet another short step to disqualify queer journalists who don’t toe a political line from covering issues all about us. Condé Nast and NBC did just that, laying off queer journalists en masse and eliminating the v few remaining platforms by and about us

It’s a v short step then for any news org to disqualify, say Black ppl, from covering issues of race. WaPo fired one of the world’s preeminent opinion journalists for daring to quote Charlie Kirk’s own words.

In an interesting convergence, the ceo of FIRE found a way to scold this journalist.

The nyt has had a de facto ban on hiring/assigning trans journalists to cover trans issues. It’s been true for at least five years.

It’s the exemplification of bigotry. Our being trans automatically disqualifies us from being involved in coverage that is all about us.

Thank you for your great journalism @walkerbragman.bsky.social ! It’s far too easy for cis judges and their law clerks, attorneys and staff at civil libertarian orgs, and others who are (nominally) committed to free speech to ignore the harm/disruption trans students experience when misgendered.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s bill makes it a *federal crime* to provide trans youth with gender-affirming medical care or transport to get that care. Skrmetti facilitated the downward spiral to this awful destination. This is an *extremely* fascist use of criminal law. www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

One reason the NYT has burned its credibility with trans people is that they still cite the discredited Cass report in reporting on trans healthcare. Never the German, Utah, or other systematic reviews supporting care. They also never provide the political context behind restrictions in care.

One good thing about the current era is that you don't have to argue with people about the fact that white supremacy and racism permeate every aspect of US society. Everyone knows it and some even admit it.

ICYMI, trans people came up in the Supreme Court today, but not in a case where you’d expect it. In Landor, the Court will decide whether RLUIPA allows damages remedies against individual officers. Justices Gorsuch and Barrett asked hypos about another spending clause statute: Title IX.

Bernie could have been president if neoliberals like Obama didn’t meddle in the primaries + ruin his chance. Polls said Bernie had a better shot at beating Trump in 2016 than Hillary. When neoliberals beg not to vote for leftists candidates bc we will lose GOP to the moderates, don’t listen to them.

A rule of thumb: when they come for a specific practice despite adopting it themselves, it’s a sign of fascism. Unlawful for thee, not for me. Fascists love to point the finger at things they’re actually doing. Remember when cops unmasked activists from campus Gaza encampments in front of media?
Commentary: Surely a judge who sentences convicted criminals to prison is as much at risk as ICE agents, yet the notion is absurd that judges should be anonymous or allowed to mask their faces in the courtroom.
Amy Dru Stanley and Craig Becker: The masking of ICE agents is indefensible
The courts must act to declare masked arrests unconstitutional, as unreasonable seizures barred by the Fourth Amendment.

Suffice it to say, these are not kids. These are full grown ass adults, many of them in their late 20's and early 30's. At least one was a elected state senator in Vermont. And even if they were, it's never ok to make antisemitic and racist jokes like that.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

For those who don’t intimately understand how news works and why Bari Weiss’s unearned elevation to head of CBS News matters, I’d recommend watching this in entirety. Also, will forever point out irony of how an admitted DEI hire thinks her hire was meritorious while Black people’s aren’t.

Bad news feels inescapable. There’s a lot of it, it goes viral, and things are getting worse.

But resistance is also everywhere, and it doesn’t get the same attention.

We need to share mass resistance, to inspire hope and so that more and more people join in.
