Before Hitler’s rise, the United States was the international epicenter of eugenic thought and funding. The movement was not fringe—it was endorsed by universities, wealthy philanthropies, and mainstream scientists. Our govt and its institutions have always been racists. 🧵👇🏼

Between 1,600 and 1,800 German specialists were relocated to the U.S., often with sanitized records that concealed their Nazi affiliations. American govt has always loved nazis. Until we come to acknowledge this, their presence will not leave and our culture will never change. 🪄

Hitler and his inner circle openly admired American eugenics. In Mein Kampf (1925), Hitler praised U.S. immigration laws for keeping out “undesirables.” The Nuremberg Race Laws of 1935 were partly modeled on American segregation and anti-miscegenation laws.👇🏼

Dozens of states enacted sterilization laws targeting people deemed “unfit,” including the poor, the disabled, the mentally ill, and people of color. By the 1930s, more than 30 U.S. states had sterilization statutes, and California alone performed over 20,000 forced sterilizations.👇🏼
