Viking sock lost in the wash for more than a thousand years? 🧦 😂

The only Viking-age sock found in England, it was recovered from the back yard of a 10th-century building during the 1976-81 excavations at Coppergate, York. On display at Jorvik Viking Centre.

My photo shows an almost complete Viking-era woollen sock, well-worn with holes at the front and outer side, as well as signs of patching. It is made of undyed wool, brown in colour. The information sign says it has a red band at the top but this doesn’t show in my photo. The label also says “The sock was made with a single needle using a technique called nålebinding, which is a Danish term. A single coarse needle was used to make interlocking loops of yarn to create stretchy hard-wearing fabric”. Excavated from the back yard of a 10th-century building in York, England. On display at Jorvik Viking Centre in York.

Finished my newest #handmade #pewter #pendant. Graded down the edges, gave it some polish then some tarnishing to give it that #oldworld recovered #artifact vibe. It’s an #icelandic #stave that many mistakenly associate with the #norse / #viking people.
