Carnegie Mellon’s literature PhD is being liquidated in favor of “computation,” casualized labor, and AI.

That has profound ramifications for, students, faculty, and program alums like myself.

I wrote it about it (w/ Catherine Evans, a current PhD student).

Earlier this year, the director of CalTrans presented this chart to members of the state Senate’s Transportation Committee, showing a dramatic rise in deaths on California's roads.

No lawmakers asked about the chart. Or what CalTrans was doing about it.

The people of New Orleans have created an incredible grassroots community intelligence service to track the feds as they hunt the city's immigrants. A real good cops vs. bad cops dynamic being replicated across the country right now.

Flower vendors. Car wash workers. Elders on bicycles. Day laborers. The pointless cruelty & authoritarian assault on human beings in LA continues. 💔 It’s insane what this country has become, how this regime mocks our values of compassion & community. Fuck ICE & protect your neighbors as you can!

This piece makes essential connections between the unfettered embrace of AI by American universities, its corrosive effects on critical thinking, and the appalling trade-off of cutting programs & delegitimizing the work of dedicated faculty, all so tech bros can rake in the $$$. Well worth a read.
AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself
Students use AI to write papers, professors use AI to grade them, degrees become meaningless, and tech companies make fortunes. Welcome to the death of higher education.

Unflinching, righteous American hero. When you need courage to actively resist, even in small unsung ways, the atrocities we see our own government committing every day in this country, hold this man in your mind and your heart.

Absolutely monstrous. The trauma this poor child must be suffering. (Think how terrified kids get losing mom at the mall for 5 minutes.) And Tricia McLaughlin’s claim, when asked about this heinous fuck up, “we don’t separate families” is just a callous fuck you to any person appalled by this shit.

Co-signing this entire 🧵. The ratio btwn truly engaged students & those described here grows more lopsided each semester even as enrollment drops=pressure to “meet students where they are” or risk furlough. Add AI & it feels like a compliant generation being prepped for easy techno-fascist control.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

As a historian, I have been torturing myself by watching some of the series that the White House in cooperation with Hillsdale College produced about American Independence (tellingly, they avoid the word "revolution").
