Pedro Pascal in Buffy S4 is so freaking young it's weirding me out.
A ridiculously young and preppy Pedro Pascal with a smooth face and a Tom Cruise hairdo chatting with Buffy.

definitely setting/explaining rules early is key

we're trying to do this, but they're using AI anyhow--I do agree that creating ultra-specific assignments is a good strategy, though--it's just hard to reach the students who don't come to class and then use AI at the last minute

this is a great start!

what's going on with this poor rabbit?

not to be contrarian, but then we're still using AI--I appreciate your advice on this though!

Comp instructors are being forced to radically redesign their courses every semester to somehow deal with AI, but we can't outfox it because it's not actually intelligent. Students are using it because they're too tired, too apathetic, or too confused to complete assignments. We need to solve that.

AI is so embedded in their lives, that it's become inseparable from their work. Students who never learned to write in high school are just continuing not to learn in college. We can't make every assignment in-class. We can't police them 100% of the time. So what are some solutions to repair this?

Here's the thing about AI: all of our students are using it. Constantly. For personal essays. For narratives about trauma. For creative writing. They're using it for every assignment. We're seeing a 50% rate of academic misconduct in first-year classes. How exactly are we supposed to address this?

I am beyond tired this semester. We're all doing the job of multiple people, and the budget cuts keep coming, while provincial and federal governments let universities burn. We need new solutions. We need more than constant administrative restructuring. We must demand and fight for something better.

If a college drama were made today it would just be the professor helping students manage mental health crises and secure disability accommodations while trying to hook them up with free counseling and food banks--that's truly a lot of what we're doing.

Love how news articles are saying "pro-Palestinian" and not "anti-genocide"

Can folks offer some suggestions for fundraising an academic event? What are some events/activities that can help to defray costs and build a bit of funding for the future? Bake sales? BBQs? Readings? Pub quiz nights? Throw them at me.

Listening to my Phantom of the Opera tape (London cast) while bf naps and sun filters through the French doors, counting down to the release date of Final Fantasy Tactics, and actually life is pretty good at the moment.

consumers aren't gonna spend shit on this garbage because it sucks ass and does nothing useful, so I'm guessing their exit plan is the same as every other bubble, big taxpayer bailouts for the well connected players and devastation for everyone else

*The AI boom = one of the costliest building sprees in world history

* Past 3 years' commitments are greater than the cost of building the U.S. interstate highway system

* Consumers must spend $800 billion on AI within a few years, to justify investment from 2023-24

www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-b...
This week, consultants at Bain & Co. estimated the wave of AI infrastructure spending will require $2 trillion in annual AI revenue by 2030. By comparison, that is more than the combined 2024 revenue of Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Nvidia, and more than five times the size of the entire global subscription software market.

Morgan Stanley estimates that last year there was around $45 billion of revenue for AI products. The sector makes money from a combination of subscription fees for chatbots such as ChatGPT and money paid to use these companies’ data centers.

How the tech sector will cover the gap is “the trillion dollar question,” said Mark Moerdler, an analyst at Bernstein.

I know it's dumb, but the saying "life is what happens while you're making other plans" = centuries of philosophy and theory-making. Life is the thing that you're in, while you strive for all kinds of ideas and other lives that aren't necessarily good. You're alive in this moment and it's yours.
