If a college drama were made today it would just be the professor helping students manage mental health crises and secure disability accommodations while trying to hook them up with free counseling and food banks--that's truly a lot of what we're doing.

Love how news articles are saying "pro-Palestinian" and not "anti-genocide"

Can folks offer some suggestions for fundraising an academic event? What are some events/activities that can help to defray costs and build a bit of funding for the future? Bake sales? BBQs? Readings? Pub quiz nights? Throw them at me.

Listening to my Phantom of the Opera tape (London cast) while bf naps and sun filters through the French doors, counting down to the release date of Final Fantasy Tactics, and actually life is pretty good at the moment.

consumers aren't gonna spend shit on this garbage because it sucks ass and does nothing useful, so I'm guessing their exit plan is the same as every other bubble, big taxpayer bailouts for the well connected players and devastation for everyone else

*The AI boom = one of the costliest building sprees in world history

* Past 3 years' commitments are greater than the cost of building the U.S. interstate highway system

* Consumers must spend $800 billion on AI within a few years, to justify investment from 2023-24

www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-b...
This week, consultants at Bain & Co. estimated the wave of AI infrastructure spending will require $2 trillion in annual AI revenue by 2030. By comparison, that is more than the combined 2024 revenue of Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Nvidia, and more than five times the size of the entire global subscription software market.

Morgan Stanley estimates that last year there was around $45 billion of revenue for AI products. The sector makes money from a combination of subscription fees for chatbots such as ChatGPT and money paid to use these companies’ data centers.

How the tech sector will cover the gap is “the trillion dollar question,” said Mark Moerdler, an analyst at Bernstein.

I know it's dumb, but the saying "life is what happens while you're making other plans" = centuries of philosophy and theory-making. Life is the thing that you're in, while you strive for all kinds of ideas and other lives that aren't necessarily good. You're alive in this moment and it's yours.

I'm trying to design a composition course based on "slow reading and writing"--the idea that slowing down and engaging with complex processes over a long period can offer deeper ways of reading and writing. But it requires attention and patience, and those skills can become outcomes for the course.

We're teaching a generation of students who have been recorded--often against their will--for their entire lives. They have little experience of privacy or boundaries. But many eras had a similar lack of privacy, and we can work with that. We can gently re-build attention and model safety.

I hear a lot of complaints about addiction to social media. And I agree that social media can be highly engaging and extremely manipulative. But capitalism structures the delivery of virtually every art form. We've always been manipulated. We have to figure out how to co-exist in that chaos,

Instead of all the hand-wringing articles about how Gen Z can't read and the Internet broke civilization, we need to think more deeply about how folks are reading and experiencing stories when our lives are half-digital. Screens have always existed in one form or another. How are we reading now?

Is there a way to hack Outlook and keep it from displaying someone's old name? It only seems to register legal name changes, but if someone is in the middle of that process, how do you alter the name on their email?

The funding necessary for tech support to ensure every hybrid session runs smoothly is usually about $100/hour, which can really add up. And if you want good sound quality, that can be expensive as well.

As a trans woman who is proudly anti-fascist, I'm just wondering if Trump designating me a terrorist TWICE cancels out?

Am I back to upstanding citizen? Or am I a SUPER DUPER terrorist?

If you were going to attend a queer and trans fantasy conference in a smaller Canadian city, would you rather it be 1) online, or 2) in-person? Hybrid is often so expensive that it's beyond the budgets of most smaller schools. But in-person with some remote presenters is also possible.
