It's also to clean and restore leather after riding (motorcycle clubs being a thing), driving and playing, so having smart and sanitary ways to clean piss, cum and dirt is a must. You also need to have a system to prevent cross-contamination through your tools. It helps that alcohol is often used.

If people are getting into bootblacking, I encourage people to look into leather clubs in their area and see if any community bootblacks are willing to teach, then approach them -very respectfully-. This is ancestral community knowledge often passed from elder onward. I learned from a title holder.

The goal of bootblacks is to primarily protect the health and safety of people that play with leather. This means body-safe tools, good customer service and being mindful of leather science, as well as good ethical and community behavior. A lot of shoe-shine stuff is carcinogenic (like creme polish)

But generally you will see boot-blacks compensate with polish, often by melting down polish and brushing it onto hi-shine boots before buffing it. This is basically just taking the wax and coating it. Wax will NOT flex either and will not do well in those creases. You want the dye to help equalize

Basically the plastic or pigment layer is rippling and bending off of the leather at the crease. The cheaper the leather the more likely this happens. Theres not really anything you can do other than repainting or melting the plastic back down. That's not really the realm of boot-blacking.

Patent leather or hi-shine leather is basically leather with a layer of plastic, acrylic or pigment on the surface blocking off the surface of the leather, usually for aesthetic reasons, but also to maintain that polished look. This often doesnt wrinkle well and can look alarming.

True leather is skin. Skin naturally wrinkles and shows wear with use, but this does not mean that it is weakening or aging. However, if dirt or sand gets in wrinkles, it can saw through the fibers, so we brush this when we can.
