Death. “In Human Form.” July 31, 1993. One Step Beyond club, Santa Clara CA. Footage like this is why I think of old school bootleggers as music historians. This is front stage.

The Fog. 1980. Dir: John Carpenter. Apparently in the original cut, Blake takes the cross and leaves — and test audiences hated it, thought it was anti climactic — so they restaged & reshot this new finale, and for me it’s one of Carpenter’s best endings. Even if he himself disagrees.

If there was ever a song which drops you into a midnight jungle and drags you in by your feet, this is it.

They say the roots of thrash metal are NWOBHM + punk — but really the punk aspect is attitude, because the *musicianship* of thrash needs precision. Hetfield is ‘simply’ chugging an open E here — the other 3 are giving the song its dynamic — but he’s the anchor. Lars didn’t set the tempo, James did.

Black Sabbath. “Junior’s Eyes.” 1977. BBC TV. *SUPER RARE* recently unearthed footage [the last 24 hrs] of Dave Walker fronting the band in that brief window Ozzy quit before coming back to record NSD with his own vocal arrangements. Iommi, Geezer, Ward & Walker.

The fact this got 1.3K likes and 50 reposts is telling when film snobs can’t comprehend cult cinema — because let me tell ya, sure, while it’s not his best, The Running Man is fcking Lawrence of Arabia in the world of action B-movies 😂

Heart. Live At KWSU TV studio. 1976. This is 3 minutes of near-perfection — the song transition with Nancy playing that acoustic like it owes her money and every time Ann bringing the heat ❤️‍🔥

The Awakening. 1980. The Omen meets The Exorcist — but swap out satan for the curse of the mummy; starring Charlton Heston, and shot on location in Egypt, courtesy of Oscar winning cinematographer Jack Cardiff. The whole movie *looks* like the prologue of The Exorcist in Iraq

Together. 2025. Dir: Michael Shanks. Way better than expected. An homage to 80s Cronenberg romance-body horror. Unlike Cronenberg, however, is that it’s less FAFO noodling-with-science and more occult-folk mystery theater, but the “why is this shit happening?” doesn’t matter, you just let it happen.

Mercyful Fate. “Doomed by the Living Dead.” 1982. To think this band can headline fests today, whereas in ‘82 — at a time when you were at the mercy of journalists & DJs — they were burned on the cross like that lass on their debut. Critics who grew up on classic rock simply weren’t ready

Megadeth. “Angry Again.” 1998. Seoul, S Korea. I can only imagine that if you’re the lead guitarist in a band, you really want an expansive rhythm section behind your solo. Riff, tempo, and key changes — just to give you room to groove and maximize the fretboard.

Testament. “Neptune’s Spear.” 2016. You can tell when Skolnick writes his own rhythm sections to his guitar leads because those are his better solos — see: their first 5 albums. Meanwhile, this is my fave solo since Formation of Damnation; his neo-classical arpeggios are one of his best signatures.

Megadeth. “Liar.” 1988. Written after Chris Poland stole Mustaine’s one-of-a-kind BC Rich 10 string, a Jackson Soloist, and a bunch of Marshall amps and sold them for smack. They found out when they discovered the pawn ticket with his name on it.
