If you ever look at King Diamond’s work rate back then, he released something like 15 albums in 16 years. And all great-to-good material too, not an obvious ‘stinker’ in that run from 86-02.

Savatage. “Edge of Thorns.” 1993. The anniversary of Criss Oliva’s passing is coming up on Oct 17th. It’s been 32 years — he left us only 6 months after the release of this album. 🥀

There was always some urban legend about him getting together with Dave Mustaine but that would be like Godzilla vs King Kong of egos

Mercyful Fate. “Witches Dance.” 1994. King m’er f’ing Diamond holding a Rottweiler back on a steel chain is the most badass version of KD imaginable. Imagine not liking the Fate *because* of his vocals. Could never be me. 💀

Vocals semi ruin it. They ran through several and none were any good. Great guitarist, mediocre songwriter.

No no, it was a preemptive strike knowing that’s what every Annihilator post devolves into 😂

Annihilator. “Alison Hell.” 1989. I liked the whole ‘schizo’ aspect of early Waters — like right down to his crazy quick vibrato, all that thrash was like a carnival of psychotic clownery. Now, you may proceed to tell me how their first 2 are their best 2. 😛

I really like Shape of Water, and funnily enough, I really like his comic movies too — I thought he did a good job with Hellboy, and Blade II is one of my fave comic-to-movie adaptations.

Have you seen Alien Earth yet Gav?
doomedparade.bsky.social
It’s my favorite Guillermo movie — and he’s done a ton of great work, but this one just hits different. As you said, a moving film for sure.
doomedparade.bsky.social
Can’t wait — I know it’s gonna be a massive CGI movie so it’ll probably look like a comic, but I think Trachtenberg is ok with that, especially if there’s a tie in with Weyland Yutani

The Devil’s Backbone. 2001. Dir: Guillermo del Toro. Set during the Spanish Civil War in 1939 — 12 yr old Carlos is abandoned at an orphanage, only to discover a murder mystery surrounding a stash of gold. Helping him is another orphan, Santi. Only, Santi’s a ghost.

I usually avoid ‘found footage’ films but admittedly the V/H/S series has some real banger segments — the zombie outbreak in VHS 2 is great, but the best one is the final chapter of VHS Beyond, “the stowaway” directed by Kate Siegel

I’m have not seen Together yet either. If it’s not streaming yet then I haven’t seen it. The last time I went to a movie theater was a month ago and that was to see Jaws 😅

I have *not* seen Weapons, but waiting for it to stream.

Best Horror of 2024:

12. Alien: Romulus
11. Smile 2
10. Cuckoo
9. MaXXXine
8. Oddity
7. VHS Beyond
6. Immaculate
5. Longlegs
4. The Substance
3. Late Night w/ the Devil
2. The First Omen
1. In A Violent Nature

Near zero dialogue. Serene woodland tranquility meets callous, hateful butchery #Filmsky

Nope. It’s actually been a terrible year thus far for horror compared to 2024. Sinners seems to top everyone’s lists — and it’s really decent but wildly overrated. The way it was hyped up, damn 😂
doomedparade.bsky.social
Yeah, it’s true — mainstream cinema is at a dead end with all these remakes. However, maaaybe there’s still some cinema enthusiasts or older gen folks yet to experience Kurosawa.

[Tbf I saw Fistful of Dollars & The Magnificent Seven before Yojimbo & Seven Samurai, but still loved the originals]

It wasn’t in NYC either 👀

Are they still rolling out the Trump banners

the Predator sequel we’re all waiting on

I’m sure some Metallica fans bought Lulu just because

Yeah — but admittedly they’re widely haaaated, it’s funny the disdain folks have about them
