How to deal with your conservative relatives at Thanksgiving:
- keep to non controversial topics, like who should own the means of production
- focus on common ground, like how left communism is an infantile disorder
- remind them that Stalin was trapped in a game of realpolitik, and had few options

What I don't get about American history is during the Revolutionary War period everyone was named things like "John Adams".

But when the Civil War comes around everyone is named things like "Jedediah Hotchkiss" and "Ambrose Burnside".

Then we just went back to normal names? What was going on??

Oh really? "they/them" pronouns are woke? Did you know "they/them" comes from Old Norse, whereas "he/she" come from old English? They/them are the pronouns of Vikings.

Would you call Sweyn Forkbeard "woke"? And Eric Bloodaxe? Woke too? And I suppose even Ivar the Boneless was woke. Get real.

Alright, sirs, you're looking for a doom metal band name. Would you like something witchy, something wizardy, or a weed pun?

Those are the only choices?

Yes.

In a way Trump and Mamdani are similar. They are both populists fighting against the elite, it's just who they see as "the elite" differs.

Mamdani sees the elite as the billionaires who control the economic, political, and social systems of society.

Trump sees the elite as people who read books.

The spark of innovation which under capitalist society is incentivized by material gain is otherwise incentivized under socialism. In a society of material abundance innovation still comes from improvement of own lives. Namely, innovation which reduces necessary work for the innovator and all others

"But China has billionaires!"

So does the US, baizuo. Shut up about other countries business until you solve your own problems.

You fool! You absolute buffoon! Spain is east of the demarcation line of the treaty of tordesillas! That means, by papal decree, Spain belongs to Portugal and thus so does its land holdings! ALL THE WORLD IS PORTUGAL!

Saying China isn't democratic but the US is seems akin to Saying a calzone doesn't count as pizza but a plastic pizza toy does.

The @theguardian.com runs with "tensions rise", to describe what is in fact unilateral US aggression against a country that poses zero threat to the US or to anyone else.

"Socialism is too expensive"

Do you have ANY idea how much public money is spent in contracts, subsidies, tax breaks, etc to prop up capitalism through ultimately terminal crises?! This is like saying feeding a child is too expensive while paying even more to keep an old man on life support.

Generally speaking, I think it's fairly obvious that if the policies of a government do not closely correlate with the majority opinion on most things then that government is NOT a democracy in any meaningful sense of the word.
