Marine microbial ecology, corals shallow to deep sea, snorkeling to submersibles. Happiest when a little salty. Basis for characters in 2 fiction novels. Listens to '80s big hair bands when working in lab.

Emergency for Caribbean collaborators: There appears to be Diadema mortality somewhat reminiscent of the 2022 die off occurring right now in the USVI. If anyone hears of wider occurrences in the region please let us know! Please re-post!

I’m not an academic, I’m a federal scientist, but I work with a bunch of graduate students. We’ve held each other up this past year, to be honest. I think finding passion in doing science that will inform land management, and finding joy and peace in our field work has been everything.

Another day of responding to Diadema disease as part of our NSF project in St Thomas. Today a different site where they are totally fine then a return to the impact site to gain cultures. Sad to see these important organisms in distress. Had a clue today from microscopy about another stressor.

Emergency sampling in the USVI as part of our NSF Diadema project. Didn’t even know I was coming down here yesterday at breakfast; today flew down, and was in the water within 45 mins of arrival. Unfortunately, it’s happening at our site (but this is good for our study). Urchins are dying…

It is my greatest sorrow to share that my beloved wife Sarah Olson James passed away in her sleep Christmas morning.

Christmas Eve morning she and I watched “White Christmas,” her favorite, and talked about life, our amazing kids, and how happy we were this holiday season.

I've drawn quite a few jellyfish in my time. Their relatively simple and distinctive shape make them an ideal subject for the beginner artist. As you improve, you can tackle the wider variety of color and form. Here is a fantastical one 🪼
