Finished Ellroy’s The Big Nowhere—extremely sleazy, dense piece of crime fiction.I said this before but I like that there are no good cops, just varying degrees of bad. In the end the most “heroic” one is still incredibly corrupt and violent.

It’s so disappointing to read a pop history book on an interesting subject thats written in such a pandering style. Like yeah they’re trying to appeal to people who think history is dry and boring to read but I’d rather my history be a little dry then treat me like a kid

I don’t really understand the Secret Agent criticism that the pacing is too sluggish. Yes, it takes its time in revealing what’s going on with the Wagner Moura character but there’s so much texture, intrigue, dread that I was enthralled.

One thing I like about Ellroy’s work so far is that there are no real good cops. Some are worse than others but everyone is baseline aggressive, bigoted.
