I can't believe we've completed 7 years of this glorious pod. It's been amazing to share our opinions with all of you!! @charliejane.bsky.social and I are slowly dreaming up our next project, which we will share with you sometime in 2026!!! For now, farewell and thanks for all the fish.
It's our last episode! We're so grateful to everyone who's listened to us for the past 7 years.

We're using this occasion to talk about the state of science fiction and fantasy in the 21st century — and what has shaped the stories we've loved.

Good news we have hot water, bad news this shit was expensive
Please buy my books? Definitely need to sell a few dozen (hundred sob) copies
Plumber confirmed that the fuses blowing yesterday was due to the water heater and we need a new water heater. I did find the fuse for the water heater itself so we're good heating wise
(last night we had no light or heating in half the flat, which is less fun).
Wheee
Please buy my books?

for me at least part of that mindset is having mental space to think about the ideas, times when I'm not streaming someone else's ideas into my head via one medium or another. That's perhaps sort of unusual for a lot of people these days and might be another reason it looks like magic.
It's not a magic ability, it's a mindset. You see or hear something that snags your attention, you calculate how you could use that in a book, much as a driver notices a kid with a ball or a dermatologist notices lumps on people's skin. Mindset.

I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

I'm thrilled that @electricliterature.com has published this gorgeous story from the anthology WE WILL RISE AGAIN, which I co-edited with @older.bsky.social and @drkarenlord.bsky.social ... you can pre-order the anthology now, or pick it up at your local bookstore after it drops on 12/2!
Full warning: this story made me cry, because of how accurately and beautifully it peels back the layers of oppression, self-censorship, exile, community, rebuilding. A beautiful representative from the forthcoming anthology We Will Rise Again, out on Dec 2!
