It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

Yeah. There's something uniquely awful about grieving someone who's gone forever but isn't dead.

My MIL is only 75. She has lost most of herself, and a lot of what's left isn't terribly nice, but she still remembers she loves her grandchildren more than the world. Alzheimers is an awful thing.

I swear, in about twenty years, wealthy countries are going to be competing for immigrants, and wondering why they didn't bring in a whole lot of people twenty years earlier so their grew-up-here kids would be ready to join the workforce.

The massive downsides of low immigration. Soon this could ve everyone's problem.

I spend a lot of time supporting a reviewer's right to say whatever they want but jfc sometimes it's hard

Yeah, slashed editorial budgets will probably see off the overly controlling editor (and the 'actually doing their job' editor and the 'reads the MS twice' editor, unless you're lucky/with a decent house)

It has happened. I know of a couple of cases (years back) where authors were asked to make a romance het instead of queer, for example. But I also had an author say I Compromised Their Art because I pointed out they had used the same painfully wrong dialogue construction about 40 times, so.

The only correct take on a fundamentally anti-human technology.
Screenshot of David Simon interview
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I am not saying "the editor should crassly commercialise the book" obv. I'm saying, the editor's job includes considering the readership (and respecting that this may be niche), because publishing a book is a thing you do when you want it to be read.

It's your job to write the honest passionate book of your heart whatever. It is the editor's job to ensure the end result says what you meant to say to the people you meant to say it to. It is also the editor's job (unless they're freelance) to ensure the final book is one people may want to buy.

I just saw this on Reddit and I think it applies to editors too:

Don't trust a performing arts teacher who cares more about how your performance makes you feel than how it makes your audience feel.

I used to work there. the running joke was that her editor was paid a bonus to do absolutely nothing to her MSS.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Son: I got an A- on my essay.
Me: Great!
Son: Eh. Lucas got an A.
Me: Hey, comparison is the thief of joy.
Son: Only when you're comparing yourself to someone good.

...he's got a point, actually...
