“If you lived in a world that wasn’t built for you, you’d feel disabled too.”

Ever been erased by AI? Powerful stuff from Paralympic swimmer @JessSmith27 and @abran in this week’s #ArtificialHuman.

James Lovell & NASA’s Apollo 13 team: a masterclass in bearing the odds. I always try to bring the best lessons I learn back to my career in medicine. Wrote the last lines of script for #13minutestothemoon S2 in Spring 2020, after the UK’s 1st Covid wave. A kernel of hope. Thank you Jim. #AdAstra

Farewell & thanks for everything Captain James Lovell. Apollo 8 Command Module Pilot - arguably NASA’s boldest mission - Commander & survivor of the ill fated Apollo 13. I’ve met few people more inspiring or more generous with their legacy. God Speed, safe flight. #AdAstra #NASA

Stop this. Just… Stop it. Stop using "generative AI" for anything that might actually matter, and especially things that, if it gets them wrong, *Might Fucking Kill You.*

Why does this need to be said? Why is this not obvious??? Why is this not the default way of fucking operating?! What the FUCK.

Wild case of ChatGPT almost killing a guy by telling him to substitute sodium bromine for table salt (sodium chloride) #medsky www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/...
With improvement, he was able to report that he had recently noticed new-onset facial acne and cherry angiomas, fatigue, insomnia, subtle ataxia, and polydipsia, further suggesting bromism. He also shared that, after reading about the negative effects that sodium chloride, or table salt, has on one's health, he was surprised that he could only find literature related to reducing sodium from one's diet. Inspired by his history of studying nutrition in college, he decided to conduct a personal experiment to eliminate chloride from his diet. For 3 months, he had replaced sodium chloride with sodium bromide obtained from the internet after consultation with ChatGPT, in which he had read that chloride can be swapped with bromide, though likely for other purposes, such as cleaning.
Gradually, over the course of a 3-week admission, his chloride and anion gap normalized and psychotic symptoms improved. He was tapered off risperidone before discharge and remained stable off medication at a check-in 2 weeks after discharge. His bromide level ultimately was 1700 mg/L (21 mmol/L; reference range, 0.9 to 7.3 mg/L).

There’s renewable energy ads and there’s mother**cking wind farm ads. This, blissfully, is the latter.

50 years have passed since “Jaws” the movie was first released. Which scares me way more than any giant shark ever could.

On the complexities of Covid. And why there’s more to it than whether lockdowns were bad or good. Really great piece from @adamjkucharski.bsky.social
adamjkucharski.bsky.social
New piece on why it’s unhelpful to characterise COVID debate as ‘lockdowns are bad’ vs ‘lockdowns are good’ when it was really about people who claimed that COVID was 100x less fatal than it was + optimal to have a massive epidemic immediately before vaccine… vs those who sense checked these claims.

Is China getting AI right? Been a couple of months since the cheaper, leaner LLM Deepseek rocked the AI world. How? What does it mean for Silicon Valley’s closed “all you need is scale” approach. And who will win the title fight? #ArtificialHuman www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
