Successful ageing is an oxymoron. Death awaits us all. The most we can expect is to be comfortable and hopefully surrounded by care and compassion.

In 2026, I'd like to do an academic book on "Unsuccessful ageing" focused on a critique of the successful ageing narrative of dementia.

The political appeal of the prostate for some dementia circles
When Lord David Cameron championed early diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer, it was hailed as a triumph of the medical model: screen earlier, diagnose faster, treat sooner, save more lives. I...

Geriatric medicine is:
- Refusal of easy solutions and predefined algorithms,
- To look at the entire puzzle, not at one single piece of it,
- Giving back to who gave us,
- My hope when I will be old.

Overhearing a conversation at the weekend between some American investors made me think deeply about how I would design a coffee shop here in Primrose Hill. I am simply ‘flying kites’ in this discussion, as I genuinely adore my local coffee shops.

If I were to design a coffee shop in Primrose Hill, I wouldn't necessarily start from here?
Or in 2026 - should I start my own business and put my money where my mouth is?

Interesting to hear James Bethell on the radio this morning using flattening the hierarchy as a main reason to rubbish the doctors’ claim for a paid job, better pay and better basic employment conditions.

Yes, true 👇🏻
I get asked to see 'anxious patients' on the wards. When you listen, it usually makes complete sense that the person is anxious. For patients it's a relief to make sense of whats going on, & for us carers it's important we see how the CONTEXT drives anxiety- it's not an intrinsic part of the person.

I am an academic and a clinician.
Writing about my lived experience as a son for my mum with dementia was very different to organising and producing academic outputs.

When academia was simply not enough: what writing about my mother's dementia taught me
Writing account of my mum's dementia, "Invisibility", over two years forced me to think through issues about what dementia can mean in real life for a son.

A poetics of ageing: intersection between literature, phenomenology, and care
Discussion about the 'meaning of care' in wider English society, influenced by art and literature, and history, is needed to understand people affected by dementia.
