I always return to: Why in god’s name would you, a wonderfully intelligent, curious, beautiful human being with an infinite capacity for learning and a fathomless depth of interiority give up a single iota of your creativity to a chatbot that can neither think, nor feel, nor create? Have some pride
No, these are very serious comments.

ChatGPT has absolutely no goddamn place in graduate education. It steals from other authors, routinely gets major facts wrong, hallucinates sources, and generally makes the prose flat and boring as hell.

And if you shill for it in my mentions, I'll block you.

The biggest own goal imaginable.
Adelaide Festival board has retracted their statement of 8 January and have an extended an invite to Randa Abdel-Fattah for the 2027 Writers' Week

the reluctance for anyone still actively supporting Twitter/X to reconsider about what they're doing remarkable. Would you keep working or giving quotes to a newspaper that was publishing erotica about 11 year old kids? or photos of people that were photoshopped to remove their clothing?

Yet another reason to opt out of the entire broken system
ARC’s new schedule is at www.arc.gov.au/funding-rese...

It will now take A YEAR, or more, for researchers to know whether their grants are successful or not.

For example, early-career researchers are to submit DECRA proposals 11 March this year but they may not be announced 'til 9 March NEXT YEAR!

Will there be calls for a Royal Commission into Islamophobia?

Will Grant Hackett get involved? Will community leaders blast the Albanese government for not listening to the Islamophobia envoy? Will Pauline Hanson be castigated by Sky for causing this, as Mehreen Faruqi was castigated over Bondi?
On Saturday, an imam and his wife were allegedly victims of a violent hate crime — forced off the road by another car, with attackers then getting out to assault the imam/threaten his wife.

ANIC put out a statement on Sunday arvo, noting rising islamophobia.

The media is just getting to it now.

Like Uni Councils filled with property developers.
The Adelaide Writers Festival now wrecked by the Adelaide Festival Board, half of which was appointed late last year: a marketing executive; a former politician; a local councillor/real estate agent; an airport manager; a lawyer; a media consultant; and a banker. Another public arts takeover fiasco.

Elon Musk's X is currently mass-producing deepfake images of women and children.

The federal government — which says it's "committed to restricting access to nudify tools" — has no plans to stop its 7 figure X annual advertising spend or using it as a major comms platform
The Australian government is spending millions supporting Elon Musk's deepfake porn factory, X
A spokesperson for the prime minister says the government is committed to protecting Australians from online harms. Tell that to the Australian victims of X-produced image-based abuse.

Despite everything we’ve seen over the past two years, this is probably the most shameful episode in Australian media history/ political collusion.

The lead story on the SMH is Albanese’s political opponent, who lost his seat, trying to force the government to back his own pick for a RC. Madness.

There is literally no amount of money you could pay me to go to the US either now or in the foreseeable future.
I think we’re long past the point now that anyone can justify travelling to the US like it’s a normal functional country. Absolutely baffled by people still going there for holidays or conferences.

It's fine to be racist except when it is convenient for me to pretend to care about racism!
Surprise surprise! Sussan Ley is panicking at the thought that hate speech against LGBTQIA Australians and other targeted minorities might also be outlawed by Labor.

She says she only wants anti-semitism covered. #auspol www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...
Coalition doesn’t ‘need to see’ sexuality protections in hate speech reforms, says Ley
The opposition leader says reforms to the country’s vilification laws must be focused solely on Islamic extremism and antisemitism.
