The Heckling Room at the old #Glasgow Asylum for the Blind. No, they didn't use it to shout at blind people. Heckling was originally a process of sorting fibres to ready them for weaving, it came to it's modern meaning along the same route as teasing - also a fabric preparation process.

Tucked away in an obscure corner of the Archaeological Museum, Istanbul is this purple rock, the only surviving part of the enormous porphyry sarcophagus of the Isoapostelis, Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus - better known now as Constantine the Great, first christian Emperor of the Romans. It once stood in a great domed Mausoleum, adjacent to the enormous Church of the Holy Apostles, at the centre of a circle of twelve other sarcophagi intended to contain the mortal remains of the apostles, as they were located. In, or near, the same mausoleum were the tombs of every Byzantine Emperor from 337 until the fall of the City to the Fourth Crusade in 1204. "But let us, if you please, go off to this church which lies toward the east, so that we may look at the things in it, in order to admire and describe them - this church whose founder our discourse has already declared to be Constantius. This whole church is domical and circular, and because of the rather extensive area of the plan, I suppose, it is divided up on all sides by numerous stoaed angles, for it was built for the reception of his father's body and of his own and of the bodies of those who should rule after them. To the east, then, and in first place the body of Constantine, who first ruled the Christian Empire, is laid to rest within this purple-hued sarcophagus as though on some purple-blooming royal couch - he who was, after the twelve disciples, the thirteenth herald of the orthodox faith, and likewise the founder of this imperial city." Nicholas Mesarites, Ekphrasis on the Church of the Holy Apostles. c. 1200. The church, the mausoleum, and their contents were destroyed by the Ottomans in the 1460s to make way for a mosque.

"When all the stuff had been collected [from the battlefield] a tenth was set apart for the god at Delphi, and from this was made the gold tripod which stands there next to the altar on a three-headed bronze snake." Herodotus. Histories, Book 9, chapter 83. Here, in a perspex box in the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul, is the upper jaw of one of the snakes from the Serpent Column of the tripod dedicated to Apollo at Delphi after the defeat of the Persian Invasion in 479 BC. Taken by Constantine the Great to stand on the spina in the Hippodrome of Constantinople, the golden bowl that the serpent's heads supported vanished in the 1204 sack of the city by the Fourth Crusade. The heads themselves vanished some time in the 17thC, except for this rediscovered fragment. The trunk of the column still stands in the Hippodrome with this inscription surviving on its base: 'By these [the] war was fought: Lacedaemonians, Athenians, Corinthians, Tegeans, Sicyonians, Aeginetans, Megarians, Epidaurians, Erchomenians, Phleiasians, Troezenians, Hermionians, Tirynthians, Plataeans, Thespians, Styrians, Haleians, Potidaeans, Leucadians, Anactorians, Cythnians, Siphnians, Ambraciots, Lepraeans.'
