Pitching to a crowd of about 150 at his campaign launch on Friday, Edmonton city councillor Michael Janz vowed to fight back against a UCP takeover of city council—and to stand on matters of principle even when they don't poll well.

Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer has filed his notice of intent to run in the October municipal election. He’s expected to formally announce his candidacy for Mayor of Edmonton next week.

Jaffer was the MP for Edmonton Strathcona from 1997 to 2008 and now runs a restaurant on Whyte Ave.

How I hate Canadian elections, and Canadian colonialism.

and the people running the campaigns? soulless, cynical hacks who need to be shot into the sun.

and jagmeet singh and the ndp seem to revel in their failure and incompetence. in a time when they should be gaining seats it looks like they'll be lucky to hold onto official party status.

it's cold comfort that it looks like the snivelling loser who wore a suit to his undergrad poli sci classes won't be prime minister. however, mark carney is the perfect embodiment of the soulless, technocratic, uber-capitalist Liberal party I hate.

cannot say enough how much i despise the leaders and the senior leadership of canada's three major political parties. whatever the result tonight we all lose.

I see nothing in the Liberal Party platform that could improve safety for people who use drugs, but plenty to make their lives more difficult & dangerous.

Reads to me like doubling down on drug war failures: more cops w/ more powers, harm reduction unmentioned. Alberta model goes federal.

4,000+ youth forced into withdrawal under PChAD (2016–2024). How many died after release without a treatment plan? #ableg is expanding involuntary care for adults without showing outcomes.
Danielle Smith said “let’s just give it a try” .. um, let’s not.
We need data, not deaths

A question that's apparently never been asked or answered in Alberta:

How many kids are forced into withdrawal from drugs under the PChAD Act every year?

Data from 2016-2024, showing unique individuals & total admissions (i.e. many are forced in multiple times per year): 1/
Table showing PChAD unique patients and admissions from 2016-2024 in Alberta. Numbers of unique patients fluctuate between 365 and 496 while admissions fluctuate between 507 and 668.

This story leaves out critical context. The issue is not that the UCP govt is merely funnelling interview requests from Alberta's Auditor General through a lawyer. The issue is that the lawyer or a senior ministry official must be present when civil servants are interviewed. 1
Statement from Health Minister Adriana LaGrange: It said it's standard for public servants to "either have legal counsel present, or ministry senior staff present when participating in interviews."
"This is not about impeding the investigation," It said.
